I've never stayed at a Huttopia site before and it was pretty much what I expected by virtue of a 3* venue. The pitches were irregularly dotted about amongst the pine trees so there was an informal and natural feel. This also allowed a lot of hammocks to be hung about the place which we also enjoyed doing.

The facilities on site are adequate for camping, but actually a lot of the activities around are operated by the local sports associations and providers, not Huttopia, . These activities will keep everyone entertained, with every water sport imaginable, and a rope course too. You can get a discount if you say you are staying at the site. Our 14year old loved cycling around & exploring. There is a supermarket 100m from the site which sells the basics and evening pizzas and is slightly cheaper than on site.

The toilets are good with their being many new blocks which all worked fine and washing machines were available for €4. 50 a go. The central area had a food/drink truck, a good play area, table tennis tables, pétanque (naturally).

The pool is small, and really only for kids and parents keeping an eye on things (website said heated, it wasn't!). But as my wife explained why do you need a big pool with the lake on one side and the ocean on the other.

There seemed an even split of Rentals against usual campers, with parking areas set aside to reduce traffic on site for the kids. Word of warning when arriving, due to cars parking outside of the campsite on verges, we didn't see the 'don't drive into the site, but park opposite when booking in' sign which caused a small queue for everyone. We then had to reverse out and enter via another gate to access our area which was on the same side of the road. Once on the site you can easily walk/ride between these two zones. There is a code for the barriers.

Having Maurbissan down the road was handy and is a nice little resort on the lake regardless, but a special mention has to go to Carcans Plage which has a fantastic beach on the ocean with vigilant lifeguards (which you need as the waves can be huge). We went there on a couple of evenings and chilled out watching the sunset from the beach.

There is a huge network of bike paths around, and all are well maintained. It would take 25mins to cycle to Carcans Plage. For reference we took a drive into Bordeaux which took about 60minutes and worth the visit.

In summary, if you are looking for a well kept forest site but want access to beaches and lots of activities then this is a great site.

We turned up at this campsite with no booking in the week before Bastille Day. We’d travelled up from Spain and just wanted somewhere for a day or two before we carried on north to our return ferry. We ended up spending a week here leaving us to do a mad dash for the ferry at the end of our holiday!

We’ve used Huttopia / Indigo sites before so knew what to expect. This site was clearly an old campsite owned by someone else before (see the other review below…) & we had arrived within the first couple of weeks of the new ownership. Indigo have installed all new toilet blocks (which were immaculate and plentiful) and there is a huge play area / gathering area in the middle of the site. All the pitches are just dotted around between the trees in the sand. The pool was next to the Reception Area & was just a simple pool with a separate paddling pool for the little ones. I should imagine if they had been designing the site from scratch, they would have the pool, playground & food truck together, but it was fine with the layout they had. There was football screened on a couple of evenings as the World Cup was on while we were there which created a good atmosphere & wasn’t too noisy too late. The food truck served excellent pizzas – we were their 2nd customers of the season on our first night! Perfect when you’ve had a hard day at the beach & don’t want to cook.

The campsite could not have been in a better position. The huge Lac D’Hourtin was 100 yards from the site through the dunes and the woods. Once you were at the lake, there is a beach with a café & activities – windsurfing / peddle boats etc. You can cycle through the woods to Maubuisson which is also on the lake & worth the visit for shops / cafes / ice-cream etc. We also cycled a little further to the sea at Carcans Plage which has the most amazing beach – loads of space & huge waves. All of the bike rides we did were along purpose built bike paths. You could cycle all day everyday from the site & not repeat your journey. Bikes were available to hire at the campsite, but we brought our own. If you have small children, you would probably be better off using the lake beach as the water was nice & calm. There were loads of places for days out from the site – Bourdeaux, Arcachon etc.

Even though we arrived without a booking and then decided to stay longer, the staff at the site were very helpful & found us a pitch that suited us. The pitches are a bit haphazard & won’t suit people who like clearly defined spaces. Later on in our stay, the campsite was starting to get busy, so I’m not sure how well this would work at peak season. We couldn’t have our car near our pitch – just wasn’t physically possible, but I think there were some pitches that were more accessible. Really nice to not be disturbed by cars on our pitch – I wish more sites were like this. Looking forward to revisit this site in the future.

Location - beautiful forest and lake

Toilet facilities - awful, old and in need of repair and complete refurbishment, water temperature in showers varies from cold one moment to scalding hot the next.

Pitches - we are pitch 238, we are unfortunately located 5 meters from the hub of the entertainment - not by choice, this means that we are awake until midnight and woken up with the bread delivery. The manager is not very understanding that we didn't expect a tranquil forest setting to be do noisy day and night - no reflection of the brochure. The rock band was cancelled tonight due to a thunderstorm. If it was possible to add a picture yo show you where we are pitched compared to the entertainment I would. On Saturday there was a market (!) next to us until midnight. Not peaceful.

Playpark and pool- OK quality, kids enjoying these facilities.

My main issue is that the attention to detail is so poor, the reality compared with the website description is a world away - I was after peace and quiet but our pitch is do noisy and actually is ruining my holiday

I can't wait to leave. Yes, I've tried to discuss this with the manager, I've emailed the head office, but I've had no apology and no reply.

Maubisson is lovely, the Lake is safe and clean the area is one to head for for. But not this campsite, the managers approach to customers
