A camping trial by the National Trust - this site is only open during the month of August.
Fell Foot Park is an NT property at the Southern end of Windermere, near Newby Bridge. The park offers walks and picnic areas by the lakeside. Just across the lake there is the Lakeside terminal for the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway and the pleasure steamers which can take you up to Ambleside. You can get a boat across to the terminal from the Cafe area which is also where they hire rowing boats and kayaks.
The campsite is a tale of two fields and I am sure that your impressions would be coloured by which field you happen to be allocated to. The upper field has 9 pitches in a flat glade surrounded by trees. The water point is here. This is a delightful area for camping.
The other area, Bottom Wood is really only suitable for the smallest tents but they try to stick anyone here too. They want you to pitch over the pitch numbers - I would do so gladly if the area was flat and even. Much of this field is sloping and where it isn't it is muddy. Not suitable really.
Like other NT campsites, cars are not allowed in the camping field. There is one space for drop-off, then you have to park in the public car park. Your car is typically much further away and out of sight than with other NT sites where you have to park off field. You also have to carry your gear to your pitch somewhat further than is comfortable. If you've got a big tent, beware.
The facilities are all in the public car park. The toilets are the park's existing facilities. The showers are in a portacabin in the car park. Access is with a key for which there is a £5 deposit. The showers are push button fixed temperature and free. The facilities are very good, but for the distance from them to the camping field.
There is a cafe by the side of the lake which does simple hot food (bacon butties are always welcome) and a good selection of cake. There is also a map and book stall. You have to go offsite for anything else, including gas. Bowness and Windermere are not far.
Because the site is in a public park, there are people wandering all over the place - not particularly good for security. There are signs that say 'Private: Camping Access' but these didn't appear to have any effect. The park is, in
Fact, a wonderful place to visit. The lakeside area is a lovely place to relax. The kids can splash about in the lake. There is also a really good adventure play area. As a campsite, it doesn't quite work for me.
