I last reviewed this site some years ago so just updating. We are now retired so can visit outside school holidays and I had expected it to be much quieter than in season.
This is not the case and I would recommend booking for late August/early September. We managed to get 7 nights but had to move pitch and then nothing available at all. The clientele at this time are different - mainly couples so the site feels quieter without all the families.
As before, the location is the site’s main attraction. Pitches vary in size and in the amount of shade they have. Toilet blocks were kept very clean and a big clean up operation took place after a fierce storm blew sand and pine needles everywhere.
We will definitely return to this site although it is perhaps a little expensive at 148. 95 euros for the first four nights in August before it went down to around 28 euros a night for September bearing in mind it is a fairly simple municipal. (Two adults, dog plus electric).
Dogs are not allowed on the beach until the end of September although a beach further along allows them from 15th September. However there is a little pine wood behind the dunes that we used for dog walks. Some people do ignore this ban, mainly at low tide.

This is the third time we have stayed on this site and the best thing about it is the location: behind the sand dunes of a lovely beach and a few steps away from the supermarket and town centre.
The facilities are clean and although the site has always been full when we visited, we have never had to queue. There are two newer sanitary blocks both of which have laundry rooms with a freezer for doing ice blocks (no cost for freezer). The third block is older but also kept very clean though looks a bit scruffy around the block and no washbasin cabins but plenty of washbasins. Reception staff very efficient and helpful when booking and when you are there. There is a play area on which we can't comment.
The site is busy and as it is in a town by a beach there is more noise than we would usually like but then we like being so central. The other campers are mainly French and they come equipped with full size fridges and use every last inch of the pitch for awnings, small tents etc etc so this does give the site quite a squashed appearance and many of these pitches have a number of family members so again a little noisy. That said, we love the atmosphere and the ease of getting to places.
The village of Couarde is in two parts with the supermarket, summer market with fab stalls, few restaurants, shops and beach and then a five minute walk through cute little streets to the area with church and more shops. The island has lots of cycle routes through vineyards, salt pans and sun flower fields with several villages to visit, each with a lovely food market and restaurants. Things are not cheap - around 7 - 8 euros for two grand creme coffees and eating out is pretty expensive.

Facilities very clean-especially when you consider how many people are using them. Lovely little playground for the children quite near our pitch and the access to the beach is excellent, just over the dunes. Clean and fun beach, acres of sand and great rock pools at low tide. Easy walk to the village, with bars, supermarket, market and shops. Cycle hire close by and then the whole island is open to you. Even with 4 & 5 year olds we managed to cover 1/2 the island in one day despite it being 30+ degrees.
We stopped for a week and were sad to go, we didn't need the car once (although used it on one very windy day to visit another village). Staff very helpful too, I needed something posted from England and they even came to find me to let me know it had arrived. They also booked a restaurant for us.
Just beware that when it rains you may need to rush out and dig a trench around your tent, we only had 2 hours of rain whilst we were there but you are camping on sand.
Over all a fantastic municipal site.
