We stayed in a lodge here over February half term and all was great.
We arrived slightly before the official check-in time and the lodge was ready for us, so we were good to go. The reception staff were very friendly and explained where all the facilities were and how they all worked and directed us to the lodge.
The lodge was superb, two bedrooms, one twin and one double, a shower / toilet room and open planned living room, kitchen and dining area. Fully equipped with all kitchen utensils, cooker, microwave, toaster etc. TV and stereo all available too. All rooms had adequate heating and the lodge was toastie all week. Each lodge has its own parking area next to it and have verandas with gates, so nice and secure for the dog too. Some lodges have hot tubs, however ours did not so cannot comment on them.
On-site are a number of facilities including: playarea and field with football goals, games room, crazy golf course, wooded dog walk, swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and pub / restaurant.
The playarea looked great with a variety of playthings for the younger children, ours are older now so did not use them at all, however I saw lots of people on there and also using the field for a kick about etc.
The crazy golf course whilst we were there was £1. 50 per child and £2 per adult per round. This was great fun and whilst not the most complicated or visually exciting course, it was perfect for the kids to have a knock around.
The games room holds table football, an air hockey table, two pool tables and a soft play area downstairs for the kids. Pool and air hockey were both 50p per game and all was in good condition.
The swimming pool was an excellent size and was never too crowded when we were there. They have a 'no under 15's without an adult' rule, so there were no unruly kids running, dive bombing etc. No inflatables allowed so you can have a good swim, or just a muck about with the kids if you wish. Access is through the small shop in reception and it is unisex changing rooms, however there were lots of cubicles for privacy. £1 to use the lockers which was refunded when you put the key back in.
The shop in reception stocked a few essentials to get you out of a pickle, so very handy.
The sauna and jacuzzi are also in this part of the building and very very relaxing, clean and useful.
The Coach House Inn pub and restaurant was reasonably priced for food and drink and they stocked the usual lagers, wines and spirits. The only snacks available were nuts, so if you like crisps with your drink you will have no luck here. They have indoor and outdoor seating areas. The food was great and we ate on one occasion and service was quick and polite. We only ate there once as we wanted to check out other places in the area.
We also ate at the Fenny Bentley Inn which is around a mile down the road, you could walk this, but there are no street lights and the lorries thunder down the road. The service was great however the food was average and quite expensive. But a great place for the kids to run around whilst you sup a pint.
Locally is the town of Ashbourne, this is 0. 7 miles away and the kids walked it and although hilly, is not too bad. Lorries do thunder up the road so I would be cautious if doing this with little ones.
Ashboure has all the shops you need including a large Sainsburys, Co Op, butchers, leisure centre, hardwear, Chinese and Indian restaurants etc. Lots of outdoor type shops too for walking boots, sticks, clothing etc.
A 10-minute walk from the site and you are on the Tissington Trail, I cycled this and you can go for miles and miles if you wish. Once you are on the trail it is safe walking or cycling away from all the roads.
The usual Peak District attractions are all fairly close by including the towns of Buxton, Matlock and Bakewell. Each with their own attractions that are too numerous to mention.
We travelled up to Kinder Scout and beyond which takes around an hour in the car, some great walks and exploring for the kids.
Over a great site, a great area and I would return with my family to this site.
