Mature couple with large tent. Length of stay – 9 nights.
A lovely campsite run by an enthusiastic and hard-working young couple, Max and his wife, both of whom speak some English. Set amongst trees of different varieties, ages and sizes, most pitches have a mix of sunshine and shade, with a few being deeper under the trees. Most pitches are reasonably large, but not huge.
The ground is quite stony beneath thin topsoil and I wished I'd brought my lump hammer! The site has a wonderfully calm and tranquil atmosphere with hardly any road noise and just the exotic bird calls to listen to from the denser woodland beyond. There are two well-kept wash blocks, one newer than the other and only just being opened for use in mid-June.
The only thing we didn't like was the loo roll dispenser outside the toilets, but that was a minor inconvenience at this gem of a campsite. There’s a separate dish-washing area and a laundry and a nice-looking little swimming pool, but we didn’t actually use it. Bread and croissants can be ordered the day before and are delivered straight to your pitch by about 8. 30am.
The bar/restaurant serves delicious meals cooked on a wood-fired range, but things were only just getting started on around 18th June, with food being served on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights only, plus a few lunchtimes, but it was a little unpredictable and we needed to keep our eyes on the blackboard to find out when it would be open. Max’s wife cooks her own Crème Catalan, which is similar to a Crème brûlée but includes cinnamon and is absolutely delicious.
The local village of Latour-de-France has a couple of restaurants, but no bar that we could see, or at least not one that was open, so quite understandably the local residents make use of the campsite bar as a community facility, which is a fantastic business opportunity for the owners and creates more of a genuine French feel to the place.
On one day the restaurant was available only for a local group and on another for a family gathering, which did confuse a few campers when they couldn't get a seat. But if you let the owners know that you’d like to eat there they will do their best to fit you in, which they did twice for us, so no complaints. Things may be different in high season when it's in full swing and more focussed on the campers.
The walk into Latour takes at least 20 minutes, but there’s a car park just as you enter the village after the ‘Y’ junction, just before the pleasant La Fabrique restaurant. Tucked away at the back of the car park is a metal footbridge over the river and a path leading up to the post office.
There’s a boulangerie that is worth the stroll further uphill and the church is worth even more of a puff to reach, where you will find two benches facing each other, overlooking the road bridge and the Agly river valley and where you can take a well-earned breather in the shade. A brief comment on the geography and language – I have a strong feeling that ‘La Tour’ has the same root as the Devon term ‘Tor’, for a rocky outcrop on the top of a steep hill.
There are bars, a couple of restaurants and another good boulangerie a short drive away in Estagel, plus a well-stocked Carrefour Contact which had everything we needed. Also worth eating at is El Suquet in Montner, which serves good Catalan food and local wine and has lovely views from its balcony restaurant overlooking the fields, vineyards and the mountains beyond. The waitress here is married to the owner’s son and is from Nottingham, would you believe, which made navigating the menu extra easy.
The surrounding area has loads to see, with many Cathar castles to visit, the coast and the massive Forteresse de Salses not far away but our favourites were the completely un-commercialised ancient aqueduct at Asignan where you could cross the river by walking underneath the aqueduct on an even older bridge; and the amazing scenery at Les Orgues d'Ille sur Tet.
If visiting the castle at Peyrepertuse, which is an incredible place, please be aware that depending on the ability of your group, it can take anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes to walk up a steep and rocky track from the ticket office to the castle itself.
In short – if you like beautiful, calm, peaceful campsites with a genuine local feel and loads to see and do nearby, you’d be hard-pressed to find better than Camping La Tour de France.

I'd read the review given by TYNWAIN and booked our 5 night stay on the strength of his / her comments.
Needless to say we were not disappointed. We found the young management team of Max and his wife extremely helpful and obliging.
Whilst we thought that the site was more suited to adults, there is a small play area for children, who are always welcome, and of course a very nice swimming pool.
The shower blocks were perfectly adequate, very clean and with hot water at all times. However, Max told us that these facilities would be improved even further over the next few months.
If we visit this area again we will definitely stay at this site. We both wish Max and his wife every success for the future.

We’d explored the length of the Agly valley looking for a campsite and were disappointed with all those we found until we reached the last on our list – La Tureze, where we discovered paradise!
La Toureze is accessible, yet ‘off the beaten track’, it feels ‘undiscovered’, so maybe I shouldn’t be writing this review? We stayed there for 10 days in June 2012 when it was quiet, only 3 or 4 other couples. La Toureze feels like a former park or arboretum, it has scores of varied and beautiful mature trees which provide superb shade. We also enjoyed the red squirrels, hoopoes and picking apricots for breakfast.
It’s been a municipal campsite for 50 years and the two sanitaire blocks, cica 1970, are well maintained, spotlessly clean and have plenty of hot water in the individual washrooms and showers. The site is well lit at night. The site covers 1. 5ha and there are 73 grass pitches, most with hook-up access, and several Bengali tents and chalets. There’s a large communal undercover barbecue and a playground for small children. Mr Robert Bile, the site warden, has managed the site for 18 years, he’s very friendly and helpful and can manage some English. We paid 9 Euros pn + electricity for our large tent and gazebo
The site is 10minutes walk from the small village of Lastour de France, with a restaurant, cave, post office and grocery shop. Its 15 minutes drive from Estagel, a small but unattractive town with a wider range of facilities including a swimming pool and Local Carrefour.
We found it an excellent base for visiting the Agley Valley and the Corbieres; including Tochan, Queribus, Perypetuse, Gorges de Glamaus and the rock swimming hole on the D19 north of Maury. We also visited Fort Salses, Leucate, Collioure and the Cote Vermeille. The Roman aqueduct at Ansignan is also well worth visiting.
The best access for caravans and motorhomes is to turn off the D117 at Estagel onto D17. Although the D117 through the Estagel is narrow and can be congested it is preferable to the D9 which leads through Lastour de France with even narrower streets. Once through Estagel the D17 is good.
We loved the tranquil beauty of La Toureze; its ideal for couples and families with young children. If you enjoy quiet, simple, no frills sites in beautiful, out-of-the-way places then you will love La Toureze
