 Fantastic site!

I stayed here for a weekend, just two nights in August with my four boys who range in age from 17 down to 5.

I booked by phone and was told that there were no electric hook ups available for tent campers. This was fine as we didn't need hook up but another camper told us when there that there is hook-up available in a different tent camping area so it might be worth asking, if you really wanted it.

There was no-one on reception when we arrived but we were quite late arriving. A nice young man who was cleaning, told us to select a pitch and gave us two choices. He suggested Erris camping area was the better so we went there.

This is a small area, surrounded by trees, one of the areas for people with tents and is very nice. Walking around there are many lanes going through the forest where you can park a motorhome or caravan and these looked absolutely perfect for someone who loves to camp amongst the trees.

There is a no-open fires policy but plenty of people were using their barbecues. It seems like a lovely friendly site, three lovely fellow campers came over to assist us with our huge tent when they saw we were struggling.

The showers and toilets and washing up area were always clean when I used them. The Erris area is a good place to pitch if you have small children as the toilets aren't too far away! I agree with a previous reviewer that the children's play area could do with updating. But the children loved it anyway. There is a laundry area with 2 washers and a dryer, one washer is free but only uses cold water, I had to use the other due to a spilt coffee incident and it was 2 Euro as was the dryer which I thought was very reasonable.

There is no shop on the campsite but bread and milk could be purchased in the shop in the visitors centre and you can order food and wine from a local shop for delivery. Local takeaways will also deliver.

There are loads of activities. My older boys did Boda Borg which was very good and my eight year old would have done it again the next day! There are also boat trips out to the island in the middle of the lake or you can hire rowboats. The Zipit Adventure centre looked amazing and my 14 year old really wanted to do it but it was fully booked by the time we checked. I would recommend booking this in advance as it seems to be really busy but well worth it.

The children's Adventure Playground was really good but very expensive. If you camp there it is €3. 50 for two hours but the trouble is that it is really just a fancy playground and most children will have had enough after around 45 minutes

The cafe in the visitors centre is excellent, the shop is nice and we picked up a frizbee and a couple of toy rackets and a ball for the younger kids.

Check out time is 12. 00 midday but it seemed fairly relaxed, we didn't feel rushed out which was just as well as our packing skills are still a bit slow.

Oh, if you are foolish enough not to pack enough sleeping bags ( not that I know anyone like that [blush] ) Woodies DIY in Carrick-on-Shannon stock a range of camping equipment.

I have only two small gripes:

1/ It would be handier to have a shop on site selling basic foods. This is a huge facility, yet we couldn't buy milk till 10 am on Sunday and we would have liked to be able to pick up other food items on-site.

2/ There is a slight lack of cohesion in the running of the activities, mainly because Zipit is run by a different company. So you can't book Zipit from the visitor centre, you have to go to Zipit itself and it's not listed in the Lough Key activity brochure. Compared to the likes of Centre Parks where all activities are listed, even those that are outsourced, this makes it more difficult for people unfamiliar with the place to choose what to do when.

My children really, really, really want to go back so we will be going back again in the near future.

Stayed here last year and had a great time. The kids looked after them selves playing in the woods. Were based near entrance on the right hand side along the road side 20mts in with wooded area. Even we were 20 mts from road from 7pm road was quite with virtually no traffic.

The toilets and shower blocks were average and play ground could do with a update. There is no shop on site as such but you can ring the local supermarket tell them what you need and will be delivered the same with the local takeaway

The pitches were great with excellent privacy and water taps nearby and very quiet at night.

There is quiet a lot too do here the zipit through the trees (enjoyed this), the Lough Key adventure kingdom and experience. The village of Boyle not too far away to go by bike and the Arigna Mining experience.

All in all this was a great place to go the kids really enjoyed this place with plenty to do there and around the local area.

We will be coming back here.
