This is a pretty simple little site on a working farm, with the added bonus of home cooked food. I stayed here with a friend for two nights in May 2013 and would gladly return.

The location is fantastic if you like walking and wildlife. Not much in the way of shops/attractions etc nearby, but that's how I like it.

The site is about 30-40mins easy walking from Llyn y Fan Fach, a beautiful lake with a great legend attached to it. The whole area is excellent for walking.

As for wildlife, I saw a great range of birds and even a badger while I was there. It's a particularly good spot to see Red Kites. There's a feeding station 2 miles up the road where you can see loads of kites every afternoon for £3. I've been twice and highly recommend it. There is a cafe there too but I can't comment on the food as I haven't tried it.

I can, however, recommend the farmyard cafe at the campsite. This seems to be basically the farmhouse kitchen, with a few tables out in an open-fronted barn. When we arrived, we were greeted by the smell of some amazing cakes and were offered a biscuit, fresh from the oven. I also enjoyed two excellent bacon rolls during our stay. There was much more on offer and next time I stay there I won't be bringing as much food with me!

After our biscuits, we were shown the facilities and offered a choice of where to pitch.

The facilities are basic but very well kept. Just a couple of loos in a shed near the farmhouse, but spotless and well stocked even when two large Duke of Edinburgh groups were in residence. I usually stay on very basic sites and these loos were much more pleasant than average.

One of the camping areas is behind the house and the other is on the other side of the road, opposite the farmyard. Both are fairly rough and best for small tents but would accommodate small numbers of larger tents. We opted to go over the road and found plenty of flat spots to choose from.

The owners are friendly and very helpful. The surroundings are beautiful, the facilities are pleasant, the food is great, the wildlife is abundant, and all for a fiver a night. What's not to like?

Well. If you're the kind of camper that likes a fancy ablutions block with lights, hot showers and shaver sockets, or nice level pitches marked out and allocated for you with all the nettles removed. This probably isn't the site for you, but you should still stop by the farmyard cafe to have a pot of tea and pick up some provisions for a picnic at the lake.
