Only an hour from Calais made this campsite a good option for the half term break. Access was very easy, well signposted from the road, with a clear entrance down to the barriers.
Check in was so very easy, albeit very impersonal. I checked in online with all our family and car registration details. This meant our pitch number was emailed to us prior to arrival, and the ANPR recognised our car, giving us entry through the barrier. We were able to drive straight to our pitch, using the pitching instructions also emailed to us.
Toilets, showers and pot washing are all contained within the facilities buildings dotted around the site. They were kept clean, and we never had to wait. As well as male and female showers, there is a children's shower/wc room and a family bathroom. The facilities block is very warm!
There is also a dog shower room.
Our pitch was a good size, I believe we had an XL pitch (790). We had a water tap and EHU. All pitches looked flat.
There is a bar and snack bar on site, however we never used these. The snack bar looked very pricey. €16 for a pizza, which wouldn't have filled my teenagers (or me!). There was also a well stocked shop.
There seemed to be many play areas near reception for little children. The pool complex was good, one paddling pool, two regular pools, one deeper than the other, and a separate water slide.
Boules, football/multi sport area, basketball court, 2 x beach volleyball pitches and a bike park.
One disappointment, there are no table tennis tables.
The walk into Nieuwpoort is easy, following the cycle path from the site, it only takes 10 minutes. There are plenty of places to eat. There is also a tourist information office which has a map of a walking route of the historic places of interest.
We had our dog with us, so walked to the vets in the town for her worming tablet to get back into the UK. Good English was spoken (as it is everywhere!). It cost €45.
You can also walk along the super long boardwalk down to Nieuwpoort Bad and the beach promenade.
We took the tram to Ostend, and drove to Brugge and Ghent. Both those cities have P&R car parks. We also drove to Dinant to the Leffe museum.

Great location for Nieuwpoort, we walked to the town in 10 minutes.
To be honest, we only stayed here as we had an issue with our water pump so needed to shower, as we usually stay on Camperplatts.
It is a large campsite but level pitches we good access for the restaurant, reception, pools (which were closed), shop and shower block. Quite expensive but facilities will be the reason for this.
The pitches are covered in crushed shells which go all over the van so I would recommend putting a mat down outside and a brush for your shoes/ boots otherwise you will be cleaning the stuff out forever!

We have visited this fantastic site for the past 6 years. We don't usually return to the same site more than twice. This is due to the amount to explore throughout Europe. However, we have found this site to be wonderful in offering everything to make a camping holiday easy any super enjoyable.
The site caters for every possible combination of camping, caravaning or motorhoming.
The facilities have been updated/refurbished which is a bonus. Although, even prior to the reconfiguration of some parts of the site, the facilities were always clean and tidy. The efficient cleaning staff cleaned at almost the same time each day. The washing facilities made it easy for all ages. A family bathroom, platforms in some children's showers to make it easier for parents etc, single showers and a double shower too. Even pets don't get left out. There's a separate shower room for dogs so that your pooch has the option of always keeping clean too.
Dishwashing and laundry hand wash facilities are available in the same block. These are also kept clean by both the users and the cleaning staff. Across the Sotheby, there are a number of wash blocks, so that the walk isn't too far from any direction.
There are many activities available for children of all ages. These are well advertised around the site. There is access to the outdoor pools, soft play area, sports hall and mini parks. Oh, not forgetting the small animal area too.
A variety of evening events happen and there's usually plenty of music and beer to be accompanied.
This site is great for it's location too. A 10 to 15 minute walk will lead to Nieuwpoort Centrum. There are plenty of shops, history and picturesque places to stop for a rest. If you like Geocaching, then this is available locally too. The tram connections from Nieuwpoort Centrum are great too. It makes travelling beyond the site easy.
All in all, as a family, we love this site. The staff are very helpful, speaking superbly in a variety of languages. The Reception is filled with information leaflets and maps to help you plan your exploration around West Flanders.
Our family is of 2 adults, a 10yr old and a 17yr old (may not be happy to be called a child). Therefore, for the range of interests and ages, this site is great. You can make it as quiet or as lively as you like.
We recommend Kompas Camping to anyone, with or without child.
Enjoy.

This is a large complex which is geared for families and young children. Our visit was in late September so most of the activities were closed and the touring pitches sparsely occupied.
The sanitaires are immaculate, warm and spacious, probably the best we have experienced, including the posh Spanish sites. Electrical hook ups are close and plentiful but water is at the sanitaires.
The cyclepath by the canal takes you into Nieuwpoort and then there are other networks around.
From Nieuwpoort there is a tram that goes right up the coast to Ostende and Knokke, tickets for which are available from reception.
Situated at very convenient access to the motorway and about 1 hour from Dunkirk would make this the ideal site for the end or beginning of touring holidays.
However we would be put off by the pitching rules which make the Caravan Club seem to be laid back hippies. A pamphlet is given you with the exact measurements, positioning and orientation for pitching the caravan and the specific rules for which side and in what position a vehicle must be placed.
In case you did not really understand it, a diagram is attached to each and every site. We were asked to move our car to be more parallel to the pitch border and a poor Belgian was made to completely reposition his caravan because his car was the wrong side. ( even though there were 2 empty pitches on one side of him and 4 on the other. )
We probably will not return

Back again, this time for 4 days! Such a lovely campsite in a lovely area, loads to see and do. Nice ladies in reception who all speak English, very helpful. However I can confirm that as the ground is sandy soil over clay the pitches do water log badly during heavy rain.
Can't wait to return next year, and for longer. There's now some xl pitches on the quieter side of the site.

This is a mammoth-sized site, but despite that is quiet and well-laid out. There is a good bakery and a moderate shop on site. The swimming pools are good, being three, with a slide and a children's pool and well lifeguarded. There is a large indoor sports-hall with badminton etc for those rainy days, and the beach is just a few kilometers away. There are four children's' play-parks which are well-funded, and great fun!
There is a bar/restaurant but not notable, and lacks atmosphere. There are lots of rat-traps in the toilet blocks near the restaurant, but the other toilet blocks are extremely posh!
The location is really excellent being less than 1 hour away from Calais. However, there are plenty of options in the area.

We stayed here for 5 days on our way back to Dunkirk. Ideal for visiting the North sea beaches and there is a tram from Nieupoort which travels along the coast road to Ostend. You can buy bus/tram tickets from the site reception which last all day. We found the pitches large enough for our 2 berth van and the toilet blocks were clean. We used the swimming pools - one with a slide, one for serious swimmers and one for children and were happy with them. The children's play areas looked well kept and there are some enclosures with deer and chickens on the edge of the site which were popular with children.
We would definitely return here if travelling from Calais or Dunkirk.

We stopped here last year for a few days, this time it was a stop-over on the way to Holland and back. Great location, very easy to find, only 40min tow from Dunkirk. Pitches are a bit small for a UK 'van as you MUST park length ways across the pitch. Toilets & showers are superb, helpful reception, accept Camping Cheques so you can stay for 15e rather than the advertised price of 23e per night.
Now the only negative - You can only get on to a vacant pitch from 2pm! Which is a pain when getting off and early boat, we were allowed to leave the caravan in the carpark so we could go off shopping, but still a pain!
