I visited Cissbury with a couple of friends to combine cycling and camping. It was a great location: we were able to ride straight out of the back of the campsite and on to the multiple cycle tracks of the South Downs. The site was basic (we were in a campervan) but toilet; water and a fire in a brazier - don't need much more. The site only has room for a few pitches most of which are enclosed within a walled garden/barn area. Very friendly owner greeted us backed up by fantastic Jackie on phone/email. All in all it was just what we wanted and I will be back with the family v soon!

We chose this site as it actively encouraged campfires and was in a suitable area of the country. I rang to confirm my booking a couple of days before and was told to arrive after 2pm and to follow the signs and make ourselves at home.
On arrival there was no one around so we followed the signs as instructed along a long and VERY stoney lane and found we were the only people midweek so had the whole area to choose. There is a slight slope over most of the site but we managed to find a good level site near the entrance. After about an hour the owner showed up in her land rover and we offered to pay for our camping as she didn't actually ask us!
The only facilities at the site are two portaloos, one labelled 'ladies' and a cold drinking water tape with a copper pipe extension. Having read the reviews and description I was well aware of the limited site facilities but one couple who turned up half way through our stay were very put out and left extremely early the next morning without paying!
We were camping there during the aftermath of Hurricane Bertha but being totally surrounded by a stone wall and trees beyond that we experienced no wind at all. I think that was the best bit about the site. There is a walk through to an arch where you can see the countryside but from the actual campsite the stone wall is all you see.
One word of warning, the ground is Stoney so good quality tent pegs are needed and a mallet to get them in. Being stoney also ment good drainage so no puddles although we slid a bit along the lane leaving it was just a thin layer of top mud - nothing to get stuck in with all those stones poking out!
My rating of site is fair I think. There was no customer service - just a quick hello. It would have been much better had we had to knock at the house or there be an office to greet us, also the people who didn't pay wouldn't have been able to do so. It felt rather weird just turning up and setting up camp with no welcome. If there had been a shower unit with hot water I feel many people would stay longer. We were there 4 days and would not have felt happy being unwashed for longer.
This is a quirky, secluded, sheltered, very simple campsite where campfires are encouraged. If you need more than basic facilities this site is not for you.

Upon arrival at the site we were welcomed by the owners who were extremely helpful and friendly. They showed us up to the site and let us pitch up anywhere we liked. The site is accessed up a rough track but the campsite itself is really fantastic. It is a peaceful, sheltered spot behind two flint barns. The facilities were really basic but perfect for us as we had everything we needed in our campervan. There was a clean portaloo for campers without their own facilities. A really nice touch was the braziers, we paid extra and had a bag of logs ready for us, and tables with benches for sitting out in the evenings.
The village is within walking distance and has many pubs. We tried the Indian restaurant and can highly recommend it. From the campsite you can walk straight up onto Cissbury Ring and the South Downs. We will definitely be returning but with our bikes next time. Thanks for a wonderful stay!
