What a relaxing, quiet pretty, idyllic site this is! There are lots of options for camping - riverside bank (the best pitches) the meadow which was pretty big (some with ehu lots of space if you don't need electric) and some more grass pitches (with ehu) behind river bank (shady no views). We had 6 nights here, initially in the 'meadow', we then moved to a pitch overlooking the river - WOW. We were keen to get back from our days out to relax with a glass of wine and watch the amazing sunsets over the river. Like others say, its a place to unwind and appreciate the peace. Showers quite 'bijou' you definitely have to organise yourself before going in as there's not much room outside the shower tray! All were kept really clean and water always hot though. There's a big fridge for campers and a small play area for kids. Lots of people were fishing but this is not our bag so can't give any details. They sell drinks and ice creams and have a sheltered soft seat area with WIFI by reception. Staff don't speak hardly (if at all) any English but this was not a problem for us. We did loads of cycling and lots of the people on site were off on their bikes most days. Not only is it along the Loire with access to Loire velo routes but also sits on the canal cycle routes. A visit to Briare is just 5km cycle along the canal. There is a municipal pool at Briare too (indoor). The Chateaux at Sully Sur Loire is worth a visit (with moat). Lidl in Briare and Super you at Bonny Sur Loire. Also visit to Sancerre and nearby wine region worth a day out. The town of Chatillon itself is small but there are a couple of restaurants (by the canal over the bridge) but we didn't go to them. Could be dangers with canals, rivers, locks etc. For very small children. Great boulangerie just over the bridge too. Some people were paddling in the river, you can access the sandy bank via steps on the bridge. We actually left to go to another campsite further south but came back because we loved it so much. If you want big fancy walk in showers and lots of entertainment, this is not for you, if you appreciate great scenery, fantastic sunsets, great cycling and getting max chilling and relaxation, this IS the site for you.

Great site if you can pitch at the front overlooking the river

Some of the pithces less appealing as they were lower than the canal bank and very shady

The access to the site was over e small bridge.

The Bridge over the Loire into the town has a 2. 7mtr height restriction

Very friendly welcome

Good dog walking from the site along both the river and the canal.

Facilities were clean and tidy

I can echo everything Sigri said below – indeed we were the other English couple there at the same time! We only intended staying 4 nights but we were waiting for a replacement spare tyre for our trailer so ended up being there 8 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The site is pretty and for the most part really peaceful. The staff were kind and helpful, Aurelie and her team mate in particular were great. Agree about the shower block – very well kept although the cubicles are tiny, but once you sorted out your ‘choreography’ everything was fine!

Cycle hire is good value at €8 per day – we enjoyed our ride along the canal path to Briare to visit the Pont du Canal. As well as Sancerre, Sully and Gien we visited Aubigny sur Nere including the Chateau de la Verrerie a little way further – very pretty! Our furthest excursion was to Bourges and its famous cathedral.

The site has something for everyone, the pitches facing onto the river have EHU, there is a large meadow behind (not sure if they have access to electricity), a few pre-equipped tents for rent and various quirky cabins, including a couple on stilts that seemed popular with cyclists stopping over. Lots of fishing going on, particularly near the pretty lock.

There’s not much going on in Chatillon itself, the older part higher up by the church is more interesting, but it was a pleasant stroll across the bridge to the restaurant La Vieux Port mentioned below where we had a nice lunch. Without getting in the car there’s very little in the way of restaurants and cafes nearby but we really enjoyed shopping and preparing our meals by the side of the Loire watching some spectacular sunsets.

The fridge freezer in the camp kitchen was a godsend in temperatures hitting 39°; we used it to freeze bottles of water for our coolbox.

For wine and cheese lovers this area is perfect. By the time we left to move along to the Touraine we were thoroughly chilled out and were so glad we had discovered this delightful site and had the opportunity to spend some time here. Highly recommended.

Just returned from a lovely 16 days at this picturesque municipal site which is sited at an old lock on the Loire. Our pitch overlooked the Loire, shady and sunny pitches available. You choose your pitch on arrival, we choice a pitch where our tent was in the shade but we could access sun around it! Cost was €16. 50 a night, tent 2 adults with electric and a dog! Shower block was always clean, cubicles a bit snug but you got used to that, there was even loo roll but no seats if that's important to you! There was also a camp kitchen with fridge freezer, microwave. For children a small play park, small games room and bouncy castle. Campsite mainly French and Dutch, there was initially another English couple there but they moved on. I can honestly say during our entire stay even out and about we never saw more than 10 other English cars. From the site you can easily walk into the local town bread shop on the right as you enter was amazing (although you can pre order bread at site if prefer). Braire is an easy walk away to, along the river or canal. In the car we also visited Sancerre, Pouilly, Sully, Gien, Chateauneuf and a little further away Chablis but well worth the drive. We also had our dog with us for the first time, vet in town spoke very good English and sorted us out. There is a Carrefour within 5 mins, go out of site turn left and then left again, it's there on the left, also has 24 hr fuel! If you like s slow pace, wine and reading I would recommend this site.

This site became a 'municipale' again in 2014 so we went out of solidarity and were not disappointed. Everything is being redecorated and the 2 wardens are friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the surroundings. It's a pretty little site on the river Loire and just by a little lock (écluse). We had a cosy pitch behind the dyke(?) levée(?) overlooking a wildflower meadow. There are also pitches overlooking the river. Good loos & hot showers, a pretty village and. A couple of miles from the bridge (built by Eiffel) which carries a canal over the Loire at Briare.

We also recommend the pizza restaurant 'Les Gourmandises' in the town centre. They make their own pizza bases out of a kind of flaky pastry and they were very delicious.

We called in, heading south, in early July 2013 intending just to stay one night, but found it such a delightful spot that we stayed for three days. There were just four or five other caravans in a straggly line under shady trees along the bank of the river Loire - a seriously big river, not for children's paddling. There was room for 50 more caravans in a meadow behind but that was empty.

The toilet/shower block was spotless, the electricity worked, the price was reasonable. Just across the bridge is the bar/restaurant Le Vieux Port - not to be missed. The baker is there too, and more serious shopping is in the next village.

All along the canals which run parallel to the river are towpaths ideal for gentle cycling. The obvious first trip is to see Eifel's audacious aqueduct which takes the canal across the Loire at Briare. And after that we sat in the sun, drinking white wine on the river bank, thinking there is nowhere one can pitch camp in such an eay, relaxed way in the UK.

It's not a 'destination' site for a full holiday, but we found it a delightful place to spend a few days on the journey south.
