I had short-listed this site as a possible stop on our 'Grand Tour' and at one time had sought to find an alternative nearer the coast, but there was no availability on the ones I contacted. Are we glad that we gave it a chance - what a gem!
It was like taking a step back in time as the site seemed for the most part stuck in a time warp with quite dated facilities. The saving grace, however, are the owner/managers. What the site lacks in state of the art facilities it makes up for with service and charm. They greeted us with a smile and a shake of the hand, then Antonio led me off to choose a pitch in the areas he thought would best accommodate our caravan.
The first areas were within a wood and too dark, but we settled for a more open location on gravel/grass terrace, with a small town in the distance. They were not busy, so first of all there was only us in that area, later to be joined by a friendly Belgian couple. Many campers only stayed for one night, passing through or touring.
The toilet/showers/laundry are dated, but functional and with plenty of hot water.
Wifi was free, of a good speed, with the hotspot in a small recreation/sitting room.
Having been away from home for a number of weeks, I was in need of a haircut, so I asked them about salons in the local town of Castel del Piano. Not only did they recommend one, Antonio drove me there and personally introduced me to the lady who does the owner's hair! Nothing was too much trouble for them.
We had some pleasant days out in this area of southern Tuscany - we had done the more popular tourist hotspots of Florence, Pisa, Sienna, Lucca and so on some years ago. My favourite this time was the drive across Val d'Orcia to the town of Pienza. Beautiful scenery, and the town is small, quaint and charming. Had one of my favourite meals of this trip there too.
We did have several thunderstorms during our seven-night stay, but the pitch was well-drained, and we also had plenty of sunshine which soon dried up the rain. It was a haven for wildlife too being so quiet and peaceful. One day a small deer scampered along the grassy terrace below our pitch, and at night we had fire-flies outside - I had never seen them before and it felt quite magical.
Other special memories include fantastic sunsets and pastries from the local family bakery in the town. We intend to return some time in the next few years.
