I stayed here in early July with a friend as our base for a Mountain biking holiday, enjoying the many and varied cycling options afforded by the Mendip hills.
It was our first visit to the campsite, and whilst the website contained some useful information we were not sure what to expect for £5 per person per night.
At present the campsite is on the basic side of things, but certainly more than adequate for the needs of 2 smelly mountain bikers who want a quiet place to pitch a tent, cook some dinner and wile away the evenings after a day in the saddle.
Located a couple a hundred meters up a slight hill from the farm-shop/café the camping field is on 2 flat-ish plateaus. The field itself is no manicured lawn, merely a grassy field cut short, and when we visited there was quite a bit of litter scattered across the place, nothing to disgust but enough to make you winder about some of the other campers rather than criticise the campsite owners.
The field is served by a small access road down to the farm-shop/café car park, and at the gate to the campsite is located the container unit housing the with men & women’s toilets, which again were clean and adequate, if a little gloomy without any natural light; also attached to the unit is the covered area with the sink for washing your dishes.
The unit does not house the showers, they are located down at the rear of the farm shop, one in the main building, with some portakabins offering further options, though without signage, one assumes that that one is male and the other female but this wasn’t obvious. One portakabin contained a bank of 3 or so showers, with communal changing, and the other a single unit, with a toilet. If you aren’t an exhibitionist I urge you to remember to lock the door!
The location is fine, a main road runs along the hedged western boundary of the field, but with gaps in the fence so perhaps not ideal for allowing little ones complete free rein to wander unobserved. And whilst the road is reasonably busy during the day we didn’t really notice it of an evening, or at night. Unfortunately due to the proximity of the near by quarry the mornings are punctuated by the rumble of large lorries coming and going from about 6 am, accompanied by the distant whine of the blast siren and occasional tremor. Again, it didn’t really bother us, but if you are seeking a relaxing lie-in it might be worth bring some ear plugs, or just get up and enjoy the morning sunshine with a cup of tea whilst putting the bacon on.
Also, for our purposes it was ideally located for “easy” access the mountain biking trials of Rowberrow and Black Down.
Also, we enjoyed a pint in the The Swan at Rowberrow, especially watching the dozens of other cyclists heading out for an evening ride whilst we luxuriated with a bowl of wasabi nuts washed down with a couple of Butcombe bitters. Another recommendation would be to visit the Cheddar Ales brewery just to the south east of Cheddar and stock up on Potholer to aid the evening’s relaxation.
All in all, I would suggest this place is a working process, with areas to be improved upon over time, but it is more than adequate and we certainly wouldn’t hesitate returning. 6. 5 out of 10.
