 This is a welcoming, friendly site directly on the shore of the Wolfgangsee lake. The site is divided in two by the minor road, with Reception and the small but very well stocked shop on the Lake side of the road. Family run, the older members of the family do not speak much English, but the daughters are absolutely fluent and will appear
Almost immediately when needed. They turned out to be some of the most helpful people we have ever encountered in years of continental caravanning.
Off-peak, the site accepts the ACSI Discount Card giving a considerable saving on full price, and is therefore usually busy.
The pitches are all of reasonable size, clearly marked out by wooden rail fences, and each pitch has a dedicated EHU, while most have an individual water tap and waste water outlet (for both of which you would need the necessary pipework, as carried by most German caravans). There was some very heavy rain while we were there; pitches drained well, and there was no difficulty getting caravans on or off. All pitches are reasonably level, and long outfits had no real problems.
Good toilet and shower facilities are cleaned daily at least, there is a Chemical disposal point, and clothes washing and drying machines (at a small extra cost).
The site has its own beach and a jetty; the water quality in this lake is among the highest in Europe, and the beach shelves very gently so is ideal for children. There is also a large and well equipped children's playground. The site makes a point of having no disco to disturb its peaceful atmosphere.
The Wolfgangsee is probably the most beautiful lake in the Salzkammergut, with beautiful views from the site itself, several pretty villages, good walking, and excellent cycling facilities with easy, dedicated off-road cycle tracks everywhere. The lake ferries also carry bikes. Across the lake from the site is the Schafberg peak (1783 metres) with its 120 year old steam rack railway to the top (and an excellent, surprisingly reasonably-priced restaurant); 3 miles from the site is a free carpark (with no height restriction for motorhomes) for the short ferry ride direct to the Railway. Pick a clear day; the 360 degree views at the top are terrific! Nearer still to the campsite is the Zwolferhorn cable car from St Gilgen village up to 1520 metres.
St Gilgen has a Spar supermarket by the roundabout at the far end of town from the campsite (Austrian supermarkets tend to be smaller); there are many souvenir shops here as well as a small bakery and many restaurants, but prices seem to be high because of the 'Mozart connection'. Strobl, in the opposite direction, is a better bet.
To reach the site from the A1 Salzburg-Vienna Autobahn, leave at exit 265 Mondsee, and follow Road 154 to St Gilgen, then road 158 towards Bad Ischl. Schwand is clearly signed.
