 I submitted this site description to ukcampsite.co.uk as it had not existed before August 2013 (my submission date) and I wanted to write a review.
I first found this site through Google searches for a farm-type site in the Auvergne area to break our journey between Kaysersberg (Alsace) and Dordogne. 'Blue Snails' at Prades came up and seemed to be excellent based on owner’s descriptions, but there were no reviews. We booked 5 nights expecting this to be a quiet farm site with about 12 pitches, some with shade and an ambience that matched the 'Aire naturelle - camping a la ferme' concept.
It has in an excellent view of the Grand Rocher (basalt) on the Allier river at Prades. It is quite photogenic on the web sites advertising it.
The site is sloping and it would be impossible to manoeuvre any caravan safely due to constrained access. A motor-home would be a possibility but it's arrival would not seem sympathetic to the site description. Tents of all sizes predominate.
The owners are very amiable and eager to help. The fridge and freezers are very good and efficient. For an advertised 12 pitches, the 3 showers would be quite sufficient.
Our major criticism, and it was enough for us to curtail our visit after 3 nights, is that there is a high probability that you will be given a pitch with no shade. (We had none in temperatures of 35+ centigrade. The pitch was barely big enough for a small family tent but no room for the car). However, the one thing that changes the overall ambience from that expected is that the towns municipal camp site is next door, separated by a hedge only and Les Escargots Bleus accepts supervised youth groups of 15 to 20 and that strains the shower and fridge/freezer resources. The group whilst we were there were well behaved and created the level of noise you might expect from 15 teenagers. They were also well behaved.
Unfortunately this was not the campsite we expected.
