Three nights here. To 'do' Marseilles and Aix.

The previous reviewer has covered most, if not all, the salient campsite observations. The pool area is decent with a fair number of loungers etc.

There is plenty of arrival/departure activity as the site is really ideal for doing the town, and not so much as a longer term stay in/relax in venue.

Both Marseilles and Aix are well worth visiting. Marseilles being brasher, noisier, full of life and well worth visiting. Aix has the 'old town' appeal with lots of narrow streets to mooch round. And some excellent museums and buildings of interest.

The outstanding Musee Granet and Granet XXme (one ticket covers both) are well worth a visit. The current exhibition of 'a history of modern art' brings together a range of artists from the very famous (Picasso) to the less well known, in a fluid and informative manner. This alone could take you several hours.

Recommend this site as a means to an end.

There are two campsites in Aix - both near the motorway, this is the southernmost one: Val St Andre and the site are both well signposted. This is quite a hilly, terraced site so tent plots are sensibly situated at the lower part of the grounds: grassy and well-sheltered (with squirrels and various birds in the trees). Three clean, unsegregated sanitary blocks although for the length of our stay the nearest block had no hot water.

The office staff were very pleasant and helpful - especially on local matters: there is no shop but a Casino ten minutes walk away (near the bus stops). Baguettes are available from the bar-restaurant which serves a reasonable, not cheap and fairly limited range of meals. We didn't try the pools or other facilities up the hill. The bar had interesting, local, entertainers to a reasonable hour some evenings.

Aix centre is not in walking distance and is no place to drive but the camp is served by two bus routes (running until around 9. 30 each evening except Sundays) which will take you to the Centre as well as the train and bus stations and most other places you would want. If you are staying more than a few days (and Aix is well worth a week), buy a ten-trip ticket or one for several days unlimited: great value. At the Place Charles Degaulle is a large tourist office with lots of very helpful staff; opposite the tourist office is a Flunch!

Aix is a great little city with many interesting galleries and museums, Cezanne's home/studio/worksites, prehistoric and historical sites; it's interesting just to walk around. Plenty of restos and bars in the centre - some of which, of course, are over-expensive but others, slightly off-centre such as the Place des Fontettes are less conventional and cheaper. It's a fairly convenient site for touring the Luberon and certainly for visiting Marseilles: regular buses and trains take about half an hour.
