Had a fabulous but sweltering 7 nights here in our campervan. We had pitch 7 which was on quite a slope but we parked longways on to gain some shade from the van and awning. Brigitte let us borrow an extension for our ehu rather than move us to the adjacent pitch. The row of pitches along the back of the site looked the best but not much respite from the sun anywhere. We usually walk everywhere with our dog but the site is a little isolated and the heat curtailed most of those. The free shuttle bus was great and we used it to get to Talloires which has a good plage on the lake with pedalos, canoes and paddle boards and also a few times to the supermarket in Doussard. We planned to use it to get to Sambuy but unfortunately there had been a fire in Faverges and the bus couldn't get through for about 6 days. Took the boat around the lake and got off for a look round Annecy. Boat trip 18. 50 euros each. Annecy is very busy but beautiful. You get the boat from Bord du Lac (pleasant 15 min walk) next to the Chez Cousine restaurant (which has a small private plage with very comfy seating and shade for customers of the restaurant or beach bar - we used this a couple of times). The other way, at Bredonnaz traffic lights, is another small grassed area with benches and stepped access to the lake. Swimming in the clean waters was wonderful. Unisex toilets on site but separate shower rooms. Always clean even though the site was full. Quiet and friendly site with a mix of British, Dutch, Belgian and French holidaymakers. Brigitte very helpful with advice when asked and willing to speak English if needed. We would have preferred a couple of shops/bars within walking distance but the 9am shuttle bus to Doussard gave us half an hour for a quick supermarket shop before catching the return back to the site for 1015. Free wi-fi near reception. Couple of table tennis tables and a mini-football table + a small children's play area. Great views of the mountains and paragliders. Awkward metal steps to access the facilities from one side of the site but sloped path the other. €33 a night inc ehu for 2 adults a teen and dog. Tolls probably €120 from and to Eurotunnel with 2 stopovers each way. Later stages of journey through the mountain tunnels and over viaducts is exhilarating. Would recommend Beaune, Savigny and Laon as potential stopovers.

Wow - what a beautiful campsite in a stunning location. The whole Doussard area is focused on the view of Lac Annecy and the mountains around it. This campsite is right in the middle of it all. All the pitches are quite tight but luckily you can still park your car on your pitch. At others they unload their kit and then have to park in the car park.

It is next door to Camping La Ferme and you do get a bit of noise that comes from that campsite. If you want swimming pools and lots of kids activities then head there!

When we got to our pitch, we thought that it was bit tight and there was very little grass on the pitch. We manoeuvred our tent so that we didn't have to walk on the ground and I had brought an old mat to put over the mud.

The loos and showers are very clean and kept well but they are very French!. The men's urinals are in the middle of the toilet block so everyone walks past you as you are using them. Take your own soap as well. There is a second smaller WC block round the corner and that was a bit more discreet. The showers are clean but quite tight for moving around. Remember this a 2 star campsite.

You can order baguettes from the shop on site for the next morning. You need to place your order by 7pm or you don't get bread the next day.

It seemed that everyone on the campsite had brought bikes with them and if you are there for more than a few nights it is highly recommended. There is a flat cycle path round the lake and you can get to most places on bike.

One of the interesting things to do is to get the free bus to La Sambuy and walk up that mountain. Spectacular views on a clear day across to Mont Blanc. There is a ski lift for quite a bit so You can easily get the kids up to 2000m which is higher than anything in the UK.

There is a beach down on the the lake where you can walk to. It's about 20 mins walk down and about 25mins back. This has lifeguards during peak time and a swim is wonderfully refreshing when the temperatures are up in the high twenties. It's French grit (not sand) so do take your beach shoes.

Please avoid the 15th August holiday. This is the last public holiday in France before the kids go back to school. Shops shut and the roads are rammed.

We did make a trip to Chamonix as well but this was packed. During the peak season, you need to leave Doussard at 6 and get parked for the cable cars by 7. 30am or you will not get on. You really MUST pre-book it about a week in advance if you want to do that. That said, Chamonix is a very pretty town and the views up to Mont Blanc are wonderful.

At the campsite remember to take cash with you to settle up. All the local campsites seem to insist on payment in cash.

Would I go back - absolutely! but. The tolls on the French roads are very steep at the moment. Including the poor state of the Pound and the cost of fuel at the aires it probably cost around £200 to get there and back.

But when you are there, the views are spectacular - even in the thunderstorms.

This is a site we have been back to 8 or 9 times over a period of 20 years, so we would highly recommend it with the one reservation that if you are looking for swimming pools and entertainment it is not for you. If peace and quiet and nice views is your forte this is the one. The site is set back from the lake with trees obscuring the view of the water but there are views up to the mountains on the opposite side of the lake. The pitches are compact but accessible with care (my caravan is 7 metres and I had no problem) and yes as the previous reviewer suspected some people book the best pitches well in advance. Brigitte the owner is a very nice person who is very obliging and helpful. The toilets etc. Are very clean with plenty of hot water.

Annecy old town is beautiful with plenty of touristy shops, restaurants, boat rides and plages to relax on. There is a tarmaced cycle route that goes the whole length of the lake and plenty of walking paths for all abilities. I would recommend the drive up to the Col de Forclaz directly opposite the site for the stunning view along the full length of the lake and to watch the parapente taking off or having a go yourself. The area is idealy situated to explore the Alps region with Geneva and Chaminox within day trip distance.

We shall definitely be back again in the future.

The directions to Le Taillefer advise you to turn right at the lights in Bredonnaz coming south from Annecy. (or left if coming north from Albertville). This is indeed the best way because the road through Doussard is plagued with vicious speed bumps. The road after the lights in Bredonnaz is very narrow for 100 metres or so but is fine after that. Do not turn into the entrance where reception is located - park by the roadside and find the owner for instructions. Brigitte is very helpful (ring the bell by reception to get her attention) and speaks excellent English, but didn’t seem to mind my attempts at basic French. Some of the pitches have magnificent views of the lake, but for many the view is obscured by trees. I suspect the best ones are booked in advance by those in the know!

The site is bookable through the Caravan Club. Site facilities are very good, with two separate toilet blocks which are always spotless. Wifi is available for a small fee around the reception area.

Although the weather was cool and showery in June 2013 we did several fairly challenging walks in the area, including the ridge walk along the Taillefer which starts in Duingt and Parmelan north east of Annecy. There are Via Ferratas of varying grades in the La Clusaz/ Grand Bornand area. The cycle track along the lake passes very close to the site it was of course a ‘must do’. It turned out to be rather harder work than we anticipated as it was quite windy so pedalling on the flat was equivalent to steep uphill! (Strangely, it didn’t seem to help going back!) We visited Annecy town, but to be honest we found it too big and city-like for our tastes - it certainly has city-sized traffic jams!

Overall we would highly recommend Le Taillefer site to anyone wanting a quiet location but close to all the Annecy area attractions. We would imagine, though, that traffic problems in high season along the lake could be daunting.
