There are many camping sites around Ruoms, some claiming more stars than others, but we have never really understood the French grading system. We stayed at Camping La Chapouliere (three or four stars depending which posters you look at) which is just a little bit out of town towards Ales. Access is easy both to the site and the pitches. Only a few of the pitches are actually on the river side. However, the river at this point is a bit disappointing as it artificially dammed, creating a somewhat stagnant lake. You can borrow the site’s own canoes to paddle about on this lake, but you can’t get very far.
Sanitary facilities are very good, mostly in a large building with rather a strange layout, but there are plenty of showers and WC s even when the site is full, and there is a second block near the river. Toilet paper is provided but no seats. The site swimming pool is on slightly higher ground, with extensive views, but shade is limited. Bread doesn’t have to be ordered, and was the best we had all trip - you get to be a bit of a baguette connoisseur after 12 weeks! There is free wifi, supposedly accessible at all pitches, but we could only get it work around the bar area.
For trips out the obvious one is the Ardeche gorge, and there are lots of companies around Vallon offering various activities. We didn’t canoe on this trip, but have done previously and found it quite ‘exhilarating’ (ie, scary!) early in the season with relatively high water volumes at certain sections of rapids. This time we did a walk from Chames (roadside parking) along the Ardeche riverside path. This is mostly easy going, but depending on how far you go there are one or two river crossings to negotiate. It’s essential to take wet-shoes (eg, Crocs) because although the water is shallow the river bed is very stony and very uncomfortable to walk on. The current is also quite strong so some sort of walking pole/stick is useful. Probably not suitable for children under seven or so.
