We stayed at this site during the UK half term, although it wasn't Dutch school holidays at that time. We partially chose the site as we've stayed at another RCN site in France, although the two were quite different- but in a good way!
The swimming lake and playgrounds are its biggest draw. We swam 3 times, even though the weather wasn't the best and were also able to use our SUP on the deeper sections. You can only use the lake when a blue flag is up to denote lifeguard supervision. There is also a small inside swimming pool but this often gets busy, and doesn't have the slides and apparatus of the lake.
The site is huge. I always like to check sites right round (in case I see a better pitch for next time) and it took me 2 attempts to get around it all. There are lots of seasonal and residential pitches, although the touring pitches all seemed to be nearer to the lake and central hub of the shop, restaurant etc. It felt spacious though, and there are also cabins etc to hire.
We hired a pitch with private facilities, and were lucky enough to have a view of the lake. The pitches are quite sandy, and whilst it was nice to have our own shower and loo, the dressing area in the hut was well, a challenge. My husband used the shared facilities too and said the showers there were excellent- no push buttons and a good force.
I loved the site for the nature, we could hear bird song all around, and there are areas set up for children to play more freely- on the zip wires in the woods. As is common on Dutch sites, the pitches are set up as little fields, with a few pieces of play equipment in the middle, as well as bigger play areas. We hired go-karts here for a very reasonable 10 Euros a day (2 seats) and my children had great fun exploring the site on these. There is an entertainment team for the mid and high season, but we didn't try it out.
We used the on site shop- they offer freshly baked bread and a good range of products, it was fairly reasonable, but supermarkets are also available at Chaam. We also ate at the restaurant once, a lovely range of meals, slightly expensive but big portions. They offer a cheaper dish of the day, and a 2 course deal too. Good choice of beer and wine available.
The main part of our stay was to relax and enjoy the lake, but we visited the town of Baarle-Hertog / Baarle-Nassau, a town that is part Belgium and Netherlands! We also went to Loevestein castle on a rainy day. The Efteling theme park is close by, but we will have to go back for that one! It's not overly close to many other attractions in the area, but as I've said, it is a great site to enjoy being outdoors.
