 Grammeno Camping is right on the beach, a mere 6km from Paleochora in southwest Crete. With the mountains to the north and the Libyan Sea to the south, it's an ideal situation for both adults and children. Parents can let their children play on the beach or in the nearby children's play area whist they enjoy a drink or a meal in the restaurant bar. Only a few hundred metres from the campsite entrance is a popular restaurant with many more to choose from after a short drive to Paleochora. Paleochora, although small, offers the usual tourist facilities including vehicle or cycle rental, several banks as well as additional ATMs in some stores. Restaurants, bars, doctors, dentists and a good optician are also available.
Grammeno is a fairly level site, primarily intended for tent camping however there are plenty of larger places for motorhomes and campers. Pitches bordering the beach are at a premium in July and August but there are many other shady spots to choose from. Tent rental and small, two person, cabins are available as well as static vans for 4/6 people. Rooms for two can be had in the main building by the reception.
The reception is open from early till late and the receptionist speaks good English so you should have no fear of phoning. There is a mini market next to reception where you can buy fresh bread as well as chilled, frozen and tinned products. Also wines and spirits and a number of guide books are available. A short walk or cycle ride takes you to a small supermarket which provides a good selection of fresh produce, bread and the usual groceries. Bigger supermarkets and specialist shops can be found in Paleochora.
As well as the restaurant and bar there is a kitchen with sinks and refrigerators and a cooking area adjacent. A barbecue is next to the vending machines where hot or cold drinks and snacks are available at all hours. There are tables and benches in a shady location where groups can sit to eat, drink or just chat. Nearby are the shower and toilet blocks which are clean and spacious with disabled facilities next to the door. There are also beach showers and outdoor showers with or without cubicles and additional toilets too. All the facilities are regularly serviced by dedicated personnel.
The owner takes pride in the site's layout and carefully retains mature trees, shrubs and olive trees which produce the pure Grammeno olive oil used in the restaurant and bar. There is an abundance of flowers in informal arrangements and pots which are regularly watered and tended by the site staff. Many carob trees provide shade throughout the site and there are resinous juniper along the beach.
There is plenty of scope for lovers of the sea at Grammeno. Swimming, snorkelling, windsurfing or sailing are some of the activities from the beach in front of the camping. If you're not interested in beach or sea there are plenty of walks along the designated coastal path or up into the mountains nearby. From Grammeno you could visit the magnificent Samaria Gorge, go on a ferry to the island of Gavdos or to other coastal villages. Further to the west is the wonderful beach at Elafonissi with a short walk to a small island and a ruined lighthouse.
The camping is open all year with accommodation to suit every season. Winter is generally fairly sunny and mild although there can be cooler weather and rain from November to March.
