When we've stayed in this area before, we've done the Passion France thing and I know that there's a good Aire in Chablis but this time we used this small site, right down in the town, by the river and a very easy walk into the shops and restaurants.
Seems we arrived at exactly the same time as the grape pickers, so the welcome that we received wasn't quite what it might have been but really we're pretty self sufficient and just got on with it.
The loo block does seem quite forbidding from the outside (and you need a code for the keypad to get in) but its good enough inside. There aren't too many other facilities but we were only there overnight and had a look around the shops in the afternoon, a really lovely supper in the town, a good night's sleep, followed by full continental breakfast in the town the next morning.
Would I go back? Probably not but that's because we've 'done' Chablis. If we were looking for an overnight stop on the way to somewhere else then it would be ok.

We wanted to visit the area to try some of the celebrated wine, having read the previous review there was some concern as we were expecting to find the sanitary block to be a haunted house crossed between something from a Scooby Doo cartoon and the house on the hill from Amityville, the reality couldn’t be more different. There have obviously been changes at the site.
Dealing with the sanitary block first and foremost, yes, the windows and doors are cage type fencing, the graffiti on the rear of the block, where the motorhome service area is, amply demonstrates why this is necessary. Whilst the block may be dated it has obviously had a makeover since the last reviewer, we found it light and airy with a washer and dryer and lots of tourist information in the central concourse, the power supply to the washer/dryer has to be unlocked by the warden. The door now has a combination lock.
The block itself is in a big, wooded clearing at one end of the site, there is plenty of turning space in front of the block and the chemical toilet disposal and the aforementioned motorhome service point at the rear (again with plenty of turning space), so the block is not crowded in by trees. The block can be accessed by steps or a flower lined ramp. We didn’t find it at all scary.
The warden wasn’t present when we arrived but there was a notice telling you to choose a pitch, the warden would catch up with you later. The pitches are divided by hedges, some were in full sunshine, others partially or fully shaded. Some have hard standing mats, the pitches we looked at were generously sized. The electric points are in the concrete posts as mentioned by the other reviewer but were not locked and could be accessed at any time.
The current warden does not offer wine tasting but is friendly, speaks many languages and offers helpful advice. We did not order bread/viennoiserie and neither did we use the site’s internet so we cannot vouch for that.
Chablis is a short walk away and has numerous shops and some restaurants and bars as well as numerous opportunities to taste the wine at the wine grower’s caves. There is an Intermarché at the opposite end of the town from the site, which we cycled to.
We stayed for two nights and were more than happy with the site and would go back.

It is unfortunate that a campsite with such potential has a wash block that could be used as a setting in a horror film.
The campsite, which is located on an island in the river Serein, is a 5 minute walk from the centre of Chablis. It is an excellent location with views of the vineyards to the north and east.
The reception is basic, but bread and pastries of good quality can be ordered for collecting the next day. Wi-fi is available at a cost of €2. The warden hosts a simple wine tasting session at 7pm each evening for new arrivals. The main gate is locked from 8pm but later access is available for cars through the smaller side gate.
We choose one of the few sunny pitches but most pitches have too much shade to the point where they are dark even in bright sunshine. Most pitches are of adequate size and delimited with hedges and unusual concrete electricity points. The warden provides locked access to the electricity, which is fine until you have to wait to get your lead unlocked when you are keen to depart in the morning.
The wash block has controlled access using a key for which campers have to pay a €10 deposit. The wash block is situated at the southern end of the site next to a heavily wooded area. It has to be the scariest wash block that we have ever encountered. I am sure that it was state of the art when it was built in the 1970s, but it is in need of modernisation due to the dark tiling, difficult to clean areas and gloomy lighting. The worst bit however is the caging that secures the block from unwanted visitors and to which the key provides access. Ambiance to the scariness is provided at night by the wide animal screams that emanate occasionally from the woods.
In Chablis and the surrounding area there are plenty of places to taste the local wine. There are a few restaurants in the town but to our disappointment these were not open on Mondays, so we had to drive to Auxerre where there were restaurants open.
We used the site for an overnight stop as it is a convenient distance from the A6 autoroute. Others were staying longer and seemed to be happy with the camp site. There is no play area for children other than a covered area with a ping pong table.
Until the wash block is upgraded we would not choose to revisit the site which is a shame as the location has the potential for a longer stay.
