A great campsite a few kilometers out of Gavarnie - it is possible to walk into Gavarnie which we did a couple of times in our 4 night stay, just follow the track at the far end of the campsite and it turns into a narrow path which does involve a bit of scrambling. In the other direction there is an excellent via ferratta route a 5 minute walk away. If driving into Gavarnie the campsite supplies a sticker for your vehicle which gives free parking (saving 4Euro a day).
I would recommend booking as those who arrived without a booking were put on a field which also had groups on it (and no EHU).
There are two facility blocks - the older one is slightly tired but always clean and we used this throughout our stay. Toilet paper provided but no toilet seats!
There is an restaurant on site which does good meals. As with the majority of French campsites bread is available daily if ordered the evening before. Staff were extremely friendly and happy to communicate in English. We arrived a day before we were booked on and this was not a problem at all.
Fantastic views from the site up towards the Cirque.
We love this site and have visited twice. The road winds up the valley but isnt too narrow and not at all difficult. You could choose to save a few euros and use the very exposed aire in Gavarnie itself but this site just a couple of kilometres back down the valley is worth the added expenditure. Park right next to the river - it's beautiful.
Grass pitches with electrics and a nice little bar/restaurant with friendly helpful staff. Toilets etc are fine and kept spotlessly clean. Shops bars and restaurants are available back down the valley in St Saveur and there are excellent markets in Argeles-Gazost and Cauterets as well as nearer-by tourist shops and cafes in the village of Gavarnie.
The Cirque du Gavarnie offers fabulous walking for all abilities and ages and is a must-do detour for us.
