We arrived to an empty field and had to phone the owners who do not live on site. When they arrived, they had a friendly chat with us and told us we could pitch anywhere we liked. We paid our £7 a night and didn't see them again all week.
This is a 10 acre meadow with plenty of water taps, chemical disposal point and dry waste disposal, but no toilets, showers or EHU. There is shelter from trees on the North side, view of the hills East and West, and a new housing estate being built on the South, this mostly hidden by trees. The grass was long, but that's better than than cut grass not picked up. Had loads of space to pitch our tent with porch and toilet/shower tent. Looked at some other sites in this popular area and found them to be crowded. Much preferred having all this space to ourselves and using our own facilities. During the week, we were joined by a few other units but they pitched away from us so our peace was not disturbed. There is some road noise from the A49 but being such a large field, you can pitch far away from it. Also the railway runs at the bottom of the site, but this is why we were here, to make use of our family railcard and travel between Shrewsbury and Ludlow. You can see The Long Mynd from the site. We walked up there, direct from Church Stretton via Cardingmill Valley and were rewarded with stunning views all around. We could even see our tent through binoculars. There are footpaths in all directions, another walk worth doing is up to Caer Caradoc, one for next time.
The site is behind a school, but it was school holidays so there was no one there most of the time. There is a public swimming pool the other side of the school. It is a very short walk into the town where there are shops, pubs, restaurants, takeaways (I can recommend Pizzas from The Flamingo Cafe), in fact everything you could want on holiday, even a camping shop which came in handy for replenishing the peg collection - (The ground on this site was the hardest I have even camped on. Take rock pegs, they are essential).
As well as being a great location for walking, there are interesting towns and villages to visit, including Shrewsbury and Ludlow, both have castles, and both on the rail route. There is also a regular bus service, but be warned, the bus was more expensive than the train with a railcard.
I have to mention the railway, though it didn't bother me, it may be a problem for some. I found the Arriva trains to be very quiet compared to the ones I am used to and they only ran during the day. But, there was a freight train early hours mid-week which did wake me, though we were half way down the field, perhaps pitch at the top if this is likely to disturb.
Rallies do use this site on occasion, but it is large enough to accommodate all and still have space. Apart from the trains, it was a very peaceful site, and one we would go back to, in fact we are definitely going back as there is so much more walking to do and attractions to visit, did I mention the scenery is stunning?
Note: the campsite is next door to Spring Bank Leisure who sell Tab caravans, they also have a campsite, smaller. With EHU, toilets and showers, but not open to the general public, just for their customers I believe. We were slightly confused which field to go in, that is why we had to phone the owners of our booked site before we pitched.
Finally, do visit the Green Dragon at Little Stretton, the food was amazing.
