We stopped here for three nights, we had originally only booked for two however here is so much to do in the area we couldn't really leave after two days.

The site is brilliant, the grounds are kept well and the facilities really clean, yes they are old fashioned but this adds to the charm of the place we personally loved it. The shop sold the bare essentials but there are shops in Staufen, a short cycle or walk away.

You also get free bus and train travel while there in the Black Forest, this is great, we visited Frieburg completely free. We also caught the train the other way one day to Munstertal this was deeper into the forest, beautiful place.

There are loads of walks and cycle paths round the site, we did the walk up to the castle on the hill surrounded by vineyards, it was lovely. I wish we could have spent more time here.

There is a swimming pool on site (you need to bring swimming hats) or you also get free entry to the huge outdoor swimming pool near the site entrance. This has a slide, a toddler pool etc. The pool is also huge.

I thought the site was very reasonably priced and the owner is a very friendly man. The on site park isn't much but there are free go karts you can borrow and there is another play area just outside the site across the river, my kids spent most the time on various go karts.

The train does go right past but it's an electric one so not overly noisy and we didn't really find road noise a problem. We didn't use the on site restaurant but did use the take away pizza which was nice and very reasonably priced.

I would recommend this site to anyone who enjoys walking, cycling in a beautiful relaxed surroundings. We will be going back. Thank you to the family who own the site for a truly wonderful few days.

Great site for those not sensitive to noise!

Staff were mostly friendly.

Pitch:

We found the pitch 81sq Metres to be small - I think this may be typical pitch size for Germany. We had two caravans / campervans pitched at the very edge of their pitches. When they had their windows open they looked right over our table. So felt very overlooked. Spacing between pitches was 30cm (not supposed 3M rule to prevent spread of fire). At one point a gigantic van not fitting on its own pitch was going to be placed 2cm away from our tent door (we intervened for safety of children reasons).

Location was excellent:

Close to town and within walking distance to the railway station. You can get free trains with the card (as per previous reviews). Staufen castle is a short walk up the hill with lovely views. St Trudpert's Church is just 10 minutes away and worth a visit. Lots to do. Walking, lakes, Triberg waterfalls, swimming, nature, Mundenhof Zoo, Schonwald Cuckoo Shop: Buhlhof.

Nonnenmattweiher Lake for outdoor swimming lake and picnics - plenty of very steep hills for hiking before you cool off!

We spent a lot of time on the campsite which had karts for the children to use. Although be wary of the family who go every year who were a bit territorial and reluctant to share, keeping karts on their pitch even though they were not using them.

Trains to Freiberg & Seebrugg:

Get train 113 Staufen sud to Bad Krozingen

Then train from Bad Krozingen to Freiberg (end of line Offenberg)

Train 728 from Freiberg to Seebrugg

Swimming pool was an amazing olympic sized pool, very refreshing and free with the campsite card. Watch out for the bees on the floor!

Stream alongside the campsite was lovely and clean to enjoy walking alongside it or even paddling/playing in it. Gorgeous walks into the woods straight from the campsite.

Showers were amazing as it was like having your own massive personal bathroom. The water could be a bit ferociously hard so that it hurt, though wonderful to have full control over the temperature.

Road & Trains: Busy

Great access to the main roads and trains for visiting the region. If you are sensitive to noise it may not be the best location. The trains run until just after midnight (not 8. 30 as advertised in the Camping & Caravan Club brochure).

The road is a very busy main road which as it passes the campsite goes uphill and round a bend. Cars, motorbikes and lorries driving along the road have to accelerate which increases the noise. It is busy until late at night as well as early in the morning.

Food:

Freiberg - For cheap food Joey's Pizza & burger takeaway was surprisingly tasty

Landgasthaus - Etzenbach - 5 minutes away delicious evening meals

Cafe Hug, Schluchsee Lake - amazing sandwiches and cakes, very helpful

Food Shopping: E Edeka - we tried Norma which was cheaper, but found it to have less choice. If you have time to look for bargains try the others.

Shoe shop between the E Edeka and Norma has a massive range and is definitely cheaper than England.

Staufen Ice Creams: Go to the one nearest the outdoor wine bar & Stafuen castle - cheaper than the one in the main high street.

Pretty much summed up by the previous 2 posters.

We opted for 3 days initially (booked through C&CC), but then about 2 weeks before, contacted them direct to ask for a further 2 days which they were happy to oblige.

Very easy campsite to find, we arrived and decided the pitch wasn't sunny enough! so asked to move, which again they obliged!

Pitch is just wide enough to get van air awning and car next to each other, but this wasn't an issue - it was sunny after all!

Shop on site encourages you to use them, but price is quite high and very limited on what they supply. We found it easier (and significantly cheaper) to buy a bulk shop in the town, but used the shop to order bread each day (and ice creams!)

Facilities are plentiful, ranging from single cubicle shower to spacious shower room with sink and bench, to a large family sized shower room.

Onsite they have a really small indoor pool, but external to the site is a huge 50m outdoor pool (and toddler pool) that is free to use for campsite users - we even had a night swim event where the pool was open until midnight and the bright and colourful lights erected.

The town is very pretty, and within walking distance.

Yes there is a train line immediately adjacent, but the trains are electric, and stop around midnight. These trains are also free to use with a Konus card which allows you free transport in the region (including to Basel).

A very helpful and friendly site, popular with Dutch and British either as main holiday camp, or as a stopover to/from Italy.

Will definitely go back again

I really did like this site and in the end stayed an extra night. The site is located about 15 minutes walk from the town centre; however the walk is traffic free and along the banks of a very pleasant stream. The town of Staufen is very picturesque and has lots of small shops and restaurants. We ate in the Kornhaus in the square and for seven of us all eating adult menus with beers and deserts got away with just under 100 Euros. The swimming pool next to the site is fantastic being at least 30 metres long and free. There is also a shop on the site and a small indoor pool for which you will need a swimming cap (available from the shop for 2 Euros)

We got a free Kronos Card at Reception, which offers unlimited travel by public transport in the local area and went by train to Freiburg one day and Basel the next day. Freiburg is a large town and has plenty of shops and things to see and Basel is also a large city, but beware with it being in Switzerland it is very expensive to buy anything.

The facilities on the site were always clean and tidy and the showers were large family sized cubicles in a mixed area with their own wash basins and toilets. There was no cost for their use. The Reception was packed with leaflets from around the local area and the staff were very friendly. Total cost for staying 3 nights including electric in August was 156 Euros

Visited the site with 21 Motorhomes for a Rally - warm welcome on arrival and all sited together. Electricity is via a metered system.

Easy 15 minute walk into Staufen but the site give all guests a Black Forest travel card which offers free Rail/Bus travel within the Black Forest. We travelled to Freiburg on one occasion and also Lake Titisee

On another. Small market in Staufen on Wednesdays and also some nice restaurants/bars/cake shops.

The facilities on site are good and several individual toilet/shower rooms. There is a small shop open early morning for fresh bread and early evening with a small bar also on site. There is also a small indoor swimming pool although we did not get chance to use it. There was WIFI on the site although I managed a good signal several of my friends had difficulty in receiving a signal.

Would definitely return here - good site but the free transport a great bonus.
