 One of only 2 campsites open in Kalambaka beyond September, Vrachos is marginally preferable to the smaller site higher up. We cycled round the circuit past the six Meteora Monasteries.
Finding them swamped by enormous coaches, plus lines of cars parked along the approach road at each entrance, we were glad that we had visited them many years ago before their exploitation for mass tourism.
Do not expect a peaceful or spiritual experience despite the amazing setting.
The campsite itself was busy, with many small tents and very few places for motorhomes.
The new toilet/shower block is an improvement, though chilly (open windows and doors; no heating) and again we had to ask for the boiler to be put on for a hot shower.
WiFi is only available at the Reception/Cafe, which was open for a basic menu from 6 pm. ACSI Card rate applied (cash, no receipt).
The ‘free gift’ on leaving was a small postcard of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem! (

Site is just off the centre of the village of Kastraki, a few minutes walk to the centre and plenty of tavernas and cafes around the site.
A big site that is well kept, pitches were tidy, grass cut etc even though out of season. Again as only us staying main facilities were closed but one toilet / shower available which was old but fine if a little chilly. Ehu on pitch, free wifi and a water tap so all good.
Owner very helpful and speaks excellent English, there is a restaurant on site but closed whilst we stayed.
The main reason for visiting is Meteora - the monasteries in the sky - which are absolutely stunning. The sandstone pinnacles loom over the campsite and you can see one of the monasteries from the site. We took a taxi to the top for €8 then spend the day walking between the 5 monasteries. Fantastic experience and a magical place to visit.
For visiting Meteora this site could not be better placed, lovely family, well kept and reasonable at €16 per night with ehu.
