I’m at Huttopia Millau, and it’s pretty much perfect. There’s even a beach onto the Dourbie but the river water is high and it’s covered just now. Saw my first Griffon Vulture - site manager is an expert.

And a walk across the meadows to the archeology site gives a wonderful view of the Viaduct. This is wildlife heaven - Nightingales, Serins, Blackcaps, Blackbirds, chaffinches all compete to outsing each other, while red squirrels pop up every so often. The local heron even uses the paddling pool for an early morning bath.

The site is very Huttopia, clean washrooms with hot water (let it run for a bit). French holiday weekends the bar is open and pizzas are served. A range of cabins and roulettes for hire, generally the pitches are low density and spacious. Jean-Philippe and Lise, and their team, are very warm and friendly.

I’m told it gets very busy in high season, but is quiet, even on a holiday weekend, the rest of the year. Top marks.

We thought we’d give this site a try as it is near to the town and had fewer campers than the nearest one. It is a wooded and natural feeling site with large flat pitches although seemed just a little scruffy in places.

The toilet block was good and very clean and the laundry facility one of the cheapest we came across this year. The pool was heated and we had it to ourselves on two afternoons.

There is also a nice little river beach. Just outside the site there is an open space which was great for letting our dog off lead but did mean there was a bit of noise from locals using the area at night.

The walk to town takes about 15 minutes and we enjoy sitting at the little bars with a glass of wine or coffee watching the world go by. There are plenty of restaurants and a variety of shops and a lovely market square.

The market itself (Wednesday) was a pretty low key affair to the markets we have seen here before in July. We really enjoy the town and like to be within a walk of it so would certainly use this campsite again on a future visit.

It is in the ACSI scheme at 16 euros a night, so very good value.

The site is easy to find and with easy access. Attractively by the river, there are many mature trees, pitches are large and electricity 10amp and reliable. Toilets and showers were clean with plenty of hot water. Staff (one) helpful. An easy walk to a pleasant town, the Gorges du Tarn is nearby and spectacular.

Wifi is OK but very slow, available in the leisure room.

Swimming pool looked OK. Site fees moderate.

If pitched on the river bank, traffic noise can be a problem.

There was a children's play area and a pleasant little beach by the river.
