Great site! Feels completely remote and rural, yet a short hop in the car to all essentials.

The camp ground is unusually undulating and lots of woodland to explore and camp in.

The facilities since the last review are much improved. The loos are eco friendly and superbly clean. There are several hot showers which are also clean and well maintained, love the rustic Swedish style!

We rented a fire pit and had a fab evening. Will definitely be back.

Lordswood has all the hallmarks of an Unplugged site: camp where you like, have a fire, lots of space.

This site is less 'developed' than Forgewood - they only have a licence for 28 days a year so restrict themselves to weekends in June and July (check website for opening details). There is a clutch of chemical toilets, 2 shower cubicles (cramped, heated by gas - serviceable but take a good plastic bag to keep your clothes and towel dry, the shower is very close to the door) and 2 washing up sinks. The toilets, although being plastic sentry boxes, do have hot running water in the basins. No shop but you can buy logs or hire a campfire grill. There is an additional tap in the far corner of the field.

The site is very beautiful, like a valley, and surrounded by fantastic ancient (and newer plantation) woodland. The valley nature of the land means that most of the site is on a steep slope, one side of the valley or the other. However there are flat strips along the top, and a few flatter bits on the bottom, where bigger groups and camper vans tended to gather.

The ground is quite rough, possibly cleared scrub or woodland, with brambles and lumpy bits- this is a rural site, don't expect closely mown grass, and equip the kids with wellies to protect them from the dew in the long grass but also the brambles and thistles.

Be patient with your pitching - the chalky soil is full of flints and chalky stones so you have to keep trying to get your pegs in between them.

We didn't see any shops or pubs in the vicinity, though Lenham, a short drive back to the main road, is a charming mediaeval village with a butcher, baker, two pubs that serve food, greengrocer, deli, and what looked like a good fish and chip shop.

This is a site for getting away from it all, enjoying woodland, the silhouettes of massive ancient oaks against the skyline and listening to the birdsong.

I find the prices high for the Unplugged (and similar) sites (£74 for 2 nights, with 2 adults and 2 kids, for example and they are ruthless about not returning deposits for 'no-shows' amongst your party or knocking it off your balance. We had one person who couldn't make it - they weren't taking up a tent space that could have been re-booked), given the rough and ready nature of the facilities, but I guess you get a lot of land and space, and I pay the price because I do want the greater space and not to be packed in.
