We had a wonderful short break at this campsite. Very friendly welcome, and they seem to have thought of everything. The composting toilets are easy to get used to and very clean. The showers are clean, hot and powerful. Flat spacious pitches with lovely views and good sheltering from the hedges. The children had a fantastic time playing in the meadow. They particularly loved the story tent, which is a brilliant idea. All in all, one of our favourite campsites and one we'll definitely be back to. Thank you!

We had such a wonderful couple of nights at Bales Ash. From the site, although quite remote, we able to access the North Devon coast easily. The site itself is in a wonderful location with fantastic views. The site is relatively level with easy access to super hot showers, hot pot washing up area and clean compost toilets which made living in the outdoors very easy. Caro greeted us on arrival and couldn't do more to help us get comfortable, the little shop with fresh coffee and croissants for breakfast just made it all perfect. Although we didn't get to the even get together around the fire because of our little one, listening to the singing and friendly chat it sounded like a lovely, as camping should be, evening.

This site consists of two large fields which have been mowed around the edges and left to grow longer in the middle. Lots of space to pitch away from noisy neighbours, and for games of cricket or football.
The site is very quiet, with just a few light aircraft passing overhead in the evening: it seems to be under one of the flight paths for the small airstrip to the south.
The facilities mainly consist of an outhouse with showers and freezer, and a pair of composting toilets. All quite quirky and different, but quite functional.
The lanes leading to the site are very narrow, so may not be suitable to the largest of motorhomes.
Very good value fire put rental, and wood sold at local prices too.

We have just spent two nights here and will definitely be back. Rang direct to book the pitch and a cream tea to celebrate our arrival and were spoilt rotten with china teacups and a huge selection of teapots! The whole site has been designed with a luxurious festival feel, hot showers, compost toilets and fire pit to hire or a communal one to gather around. Facilities are spotless, the field is beautifully mown with amazing views across the valley. Nothing has been too much trouble, we have been given such a warm welcome that leaving is quite tricky. We don't really want to share our special find but want others to enjoy the experience too! Thank you for sharing your site and home with us.

Lovely warm welcome to this new site, both from the owners and their dogs. Two nice fields, one large one smaller, mostly level. Some nice views of the surrounding hills and countryside. There are very good communal log benches set around a large central fire pit (great for large groups of friends) but we used a smaller one loaned very cheaply from the site along with some logs. There is a 'thunderbox' type composting toilet, and 3 showers inside a block. The owners were very keen to help in any way they could and were very nice indeed. We were only a party of two this time but will be going back with a larger group next time. They have no problem with a little noise as it's pretty isolated, although there is a pub in the nearby village, within walking distance. Dogs welcome. There are some rabbits in a large run, fresh eggs are available, and there is some cute miaowing from the cattery on site. SatNav takes you to within a few hundred feet, from where it's clearly signposted. There are a couple of options for glamping too, a small caravan and cabin I believe.

Upon arrival we were greeted by a warm and friendly crew, that delivered all the information we may have needed for our stay including the local hot spots.
Once we had pitched our tent we could then relax and take in the beautiful views whilst enjoying a wonderful home baked cream tea (the bonus being, gluten free options).
The showers and toilets are spotlessly clean and well maintained.
This is a little gem in the countryside, so if you want a nice relaxing break. This is the place!
We have only visited here once, but will become regular campers.

I’ve just got back from visiting Bales Ash Camp Site in High Bickington and I wasn’t disappointed. Beautiful and peaceful location with views across to Exmoor and loads of space so you’re not on top of each other and very dog friendly. The facilities at the campsite were excellent and eco-friendly, recycling, compostable toilets which were kept very clean and the showers are fantastic and FREE. Especially love the funky decor as each shower cubicle is decorated differently……brilliant. The owners at Bales Ash Caro, Debbie and Ann are extremely friendly and made us feel very special and couldn’t do enough for us plus there’s the opportunity to purchase basic supplies such as Milk, Bacon and fresh eggs (which are from the local farm) plus homemade scones/cream tea scones freshly made by the owners. We hired a fire pit and logs at a very low cost and had a wonderful evening chilling under the most amazing night sky and view of the stars (never seen so many). I had such a relaxing time and I would definitely recommend this campsite and we can’t wait to go back

Bales Ash Campsite provided the warmest of welcomes and owners Caro, Ann and Debbie continued to be as friendly and helpful as anyone could wish throughout our weekend stay. The eco-friendly compost toilets totally got my vote, I almost wish I had one at home! And the showers are quite possibly the best I've ever experienced when camping (and I've been to a fair few campsites). Clean, powerful, hot and spacious. A real treat.
The large field offers lot of flat pitches and plenty of space. It's very open so can be windy, but the openness also provides wonderful huge-sky views.
I don't know if their cream teas are a regular feature, or were special for our weekend, but if you get chance to have one don't hesitate. Completely delicious.
It's a campsite to return to. Have a great stay!
