We are back here for a few nights. Site looking immaculate with grass newly cut on all pitches - the big difference is the new sanitary block. Very nice indeed with hot solar powered showers. Friendly part time (0800 - 1100 & 1700-1900) guardienne who speaks good English but prefers you to try French.
6km to nearest shops - morning and evening but mobile shop with bread, long-life milk and a few bits and pieces calls on some days.
Just peace and tranquillity- but plenty of it.

The website for Camping Municipal Aux Portes du Sauveterre has been changed, and the new website shows the new and hugely improved sanitary block. All else remains the same as the previous reviews - this is a simple site in a beautiful area - but with no facilities on the doorstep so won't suit everyone.

Great review from Berriow. Sums it up perfectly. Wonderful site in natural surroundings. Marvel at the panoramic views, vultures in flight, local architecture and wildlife- flora and fauna. Wonderful walks in and along gorges.
Wifi is good but doesn't extend to even the nearest pitch. Good satellite reception on sky. Still under €15 per night for caravan +2 and electric.
Our second stay here - forgot to review last time.
Children might need supervision due to proximity to steep edges but play area provided.
Difficult to rate. Perfect for us but not for you if amenities within walking distance are important.
I learned today that the site will close in September and a complete refurbishment of the sanitary facilities will be carried out over the winter with completion in time for the new 2017 season.

This is a simple campsite in a stunning position on the very top edge of the Tarn gorge.
There are about 40 grass pitches, some shady, some level and some far from the electric hook ups, but as there were only two other outfits there when we arrived on July 5th we had a choice of the other 38 - and from every one you can watch the vultures as they soar overhead from their nests in the opposite cliffs. There is no barrier restricting arrival times - you can arrive when you wish and the lady in charge will come to find you later.
Apart from the views the best feature of the campsite is the common room, open all the time, with tables and chairs, cooking facilities, television, fridge/freezer, a well stocked library in five languages and effective free wi fi. The toilet/shower block on the other hand is old and the facilities are not luxurious. It is clean and perfectly usable, not at all smelly, and the lady in charge looks after it well, but she admits it needs modernisation and a re build.
There are no tourism amenities in St Rome village. The shop, restaurant, bank and petrol station are in Le Massegros, 5 km away. That is the village to make for when you leave the A75 motorway. Access that way is easy, but the road down to Les Vignes in the bottom of the gorge is really only for solo cas, not for caravans or motorhomes.
So this is not a long stay holiday site, but for those who like smaller, natural sites, landscapes, wild life and stupendous views it is a good alternative to the sites down on the river bank in the gorge itself which are always more popular and busy. And as the price was about 14 euros a night in July it isn't expensive.
