This has to be the best campsite we have ever stopped on, seriously, I'm not exaggerating.
As with many German sites they have every type of facility, but this had more than we expected. This site seems to be orientated around children, it has several playgrounds, one big adventure playground, football pitch, out-door table tennis tables and also a children’s arts & crafts workshop with a couple of dedicated workers all at no extra cost. Additionally there were a variety of different activities timetabled daily including face-painting, arts, karaoke and during the short time we were there they had an open fire where the children made and then toasted some marshmallow type bread things, I did hear what they were called but immediately forgot.
There are also themed weekends for children with a variety of activities, the weekend we were there they had a kiddies disco with DJ Ronnie and face-painting and air-brush tattoos, again at no extra cost.
There was also an impromptu performance from a samba type band that were staying at the site.
The site is huge but very well ordered with different areas for campervans, caravans, tents etc. , but there are some mixed areas. The great thing is that families with children are located together and the ‘lads and lasses on the lash’ have two fields to their selves at the back of the site. Even though there were groups of young people intent on drinking the world dry, no noise was tolerated after 10 O’ Clock and everyone respected this with only low level conversation audible after this time.
The site has hook ups all over the place, water taps at frequent intervals, waste disposal facilities, recycling facilities, two very large & regularly cleaned shower blocks with some private family bath rooms to be hired, kitchens with full cookers, laundry rooms, washing up rooms etc.
The on site café/restaurant is superb with a wide selection of meals and as usual German Pizzas that seem to be the best in the world. The portions of food are very large, however the prices are incredibly cheap. There is a large selection of beers available, a very, very, very large selection of beers, all far too cheap and tasty!
There is a well stocked shop next to the café where you can order fresh bread, but the nearest town is only a few kilometres away so if they don’t have what you need then it’s only a short drive or cycle ride.
You’d think all of that would be enough, however a couple of 100 yards from the back of the site there is a huge lake; Steinhuder Meer with beaches, marinas, wind surfing and kite surfing school, there are also cycle paths and trails through the forest and there is also a horse riding place nearby.
We were en-route to Southern Poland and this is a perfect stopping off point as it is near the A2 and within a few hours drive from Rotterdam ferry port, if you do visit take junction 42 off the A2 not the Bad Oeynhausen/Port Wesfalica junctions, this will take you on a very scenic but very, very lengthy route.
AND it was only €24 per night.
There are some downsides, there has to be eh!?
1) When we were there it was too hot, I would complain about the weather first wouldn’t I? It was very hot and this meant flies and wasps and the biggest hornets I have ever seen. The hornets weren’t a problem, the wasps were and some horseflies found me very tasty leaving some nasty welts on my legs. So be prepared and take some Jungle Formula fly repellent and citronella candles, or come well equipped as some Germans were with incense type sticks that seemed to be burning Lemon Balm, and also fly spray for your tent. We did buy these at the site shop though.
2) Sat-nav isn’t great in the area, take a map!
3) Learn some German, the owners don’t speak anything other than German. Some of the staff speak English, one of the ladies in the café had very good English and also one of the cleaners was fluent. I studied German at school and thought I could get away with what I had, I couldn’t and felt a fool after ordering the biggest schnitzel I had ever seen for my 4 year old, I thought I was ordering chicken nuggets and chips, but it appeared I had ordered a meal to satisfy a Bavarian truck driver who hadn’t eaten for a week, she did her best though.
4) German people seem to smoke a lot and whilst on the site people would put their finished cigarettes into bins and not smoke inside the café, or near the children’s areas, the beaches of Steinhuder Meer were unfortunately covered with fag ends.
