Hartswood is a blessing when hiking along the Peddar’s Way path. As the previous review stated, it could not be any closer to the National trail path. You cannot miss it as you near Great Massingham (if approaching from the south as we were).
It is not really a campsite as such, but a garden! We loved it though and it fitted our needs perfectly. The owners were lovely - friendly and accommodating to our needs. There is an easily accessible utility area at the end of their house. You can get drinking water, wash up and use the toilet facilities. They were happy for us to pitch up anywhere within their garden. Further, the owners were kind enough to lend us a duvet for extra warmth in the night as well as making us tea when we arrived and before we left.
Another bonus is that the owners offer an egg and bacon baguette for a small charge for breakfast if desired (£2. 50). We thought this was extremely reasonable and both had one. They are substantial and tasty! The eggs are from their own chickens. I believe if you discuss with them then you may be able to have more/less catering as desired for a small charge.
Our night’s sleep was not the best but that was partially down to our gear, the weather and the proximity to the road. We heard all manner of noises in the night, from speeding vehicles to snuffling horses in the adjacent paddock and eerie birds of prey howling overhead! Some noises really let our imaginations run riot. Not ideal for sleeping but certainly interesting! If you are more comfortable you will sleep much better.
I couldn’t recommend this place more, really. Options are extremely limited along Peddar’s Way and most camping sites are well off the path (we stayed at one on the far side of Swaffham - a good 3 miles from the path). Thank you for the super stay. We will be returning if we hike the path again!

A real 'Hidden Gem' of a campsite. Small, cheap, human and dog friendly and if you fall off the peddars way you can land in it!
Recently did part of the peddars way and was fortunate to discover Hartswood National Trail Campsite. Literally on the Peddars Way, an under appreciated national walk, the campsite is run by a very friendly couple.
We were greeted by Basil the Jack Russell terrier at the gate, who quickly made friends with us and our dog Bungle. The campsite is basically the cottage garden, large enough for small groups and sheltered from wind by hedges.
The bottom of the site is reasonably flat but is nearer the road. A hedge is being grown between the site and the road but has a little way to go, this makes for a little road noise but is easily bearable. The facilities are basic but apart from no shower are adequate and clean.
The site is also wire fenced so dogs and small children are safe. The nearest pub/shops are in Great Massingham, a twenty minute walk away but Stephanie and Vernon are very helpful with a top up to rations etc.
This is a tent only site! Wish there were more! Sorry caravaners.
In summary, a great little site and it would be a pleasure to use again.
