 This was our first camping experience with the YHA. Overall the experience was very positive.
We booked online, without problems. The price is per person per night and varies from £5 to £12 depending on season. You have full use of the YHA facilities - showers, drying room, self catering kitchen (hobs, fridges, microwave, kettles, cutlery, saucepans, washing up etc), two lounges - one with TV, small shop and you can buy meals, served to table, providing you order an hour or two in advance. The pizzas were very popular!
Some campers were only staying one night as they were walking the Coast to Coast path. Others, including us, stayed several nights. The field is next to the hostel: somewhat lumpy & bumpy - flat ptiches were at a premium. At most you will have to carry gear about 30m from your car. The road is noisy in the daytime but is little used at night. Firepits available. Dogs & small children allowed which somewhat added to the nighttime noise but, thankfully, nothing horrendous. Other noise included the sheep and owls!
There aren't many showers so be prepared to be flexible when you wash. Everything was as clean as can be expected.
Staff were always friendly and helpful.
The building design is very interesting - essentially upside down, with the bedrooms on the ground floor and most facilities upstairs. This may cause problems if you have mobility issues.
The location is amazing - walking from the doorstep & only a couple of minutes from Ullswater lake.
There are several pubs within walking distance and also a small but very well stocked village shop a couple of hundred metres away. You need to head back to Penrith (car or bus) for a supermarket.
Beware: mobile signal is limited in the valley.
