To Find Site:- Coming from the north on the A81 continue to junction with A98. From here the road to Konstanz becomes road 33. Where the dual carriage way ends exit following signs for Markelfingen. In a short distance watch out for a very sharp left turn and follow road along to campsite. Be aware that immediately before the campsite entrance is a railway level crossing which is closed at frequent intervals so make sure you have room the other side before you proceed forward. Reception is closed from midday reopening at 2. 30pm.

Camping William is situated on Gnadensee which is one of the smaller stretches of water that form the western end of the Bodensee. Facing the lakeside is a grassed area for sunbathing and swimming in the lake. As mentioned in the directions there is a railway line running along one side of the campsite for mainly local trains. Whilst these can be heard we did not consider them to be a particular annoyance. Like many German campsites it has a high proportion of permanent/seasonal campers on site and tourists are fitted in where there is space so don’t expect a “pretty” campsite. All pitches are of a reasonable size and are mainly on grass but often with chipped granite under base which gives a bit more stability in bad weather although it does not cover the entire pitch. The site slopes from reception down to the lakes edge so levelling may be required. Electric points are situated on each row of pitches and use CEE17 blue connectors are rated at 16 amps. As electricity is metered your lead will be locked into the cabinet and on the day you leave you need to give one/two hour’s notice so that your usage can be calculated. (If using the ACSI discount card you get a 4kw a day electricity allowance and only pay for usage above this) You may also need a longer lead depending on where you are pitched. Water is available at either the toilet blocks or the motorhome waste point. Grey waste water can be disposed of at the motorhome service point and at a point by each toilet block, as can the chemical toilet. There are two toilet blocks, the one further into the site being the larger. They are of a nice quality with seated toilets and paper provided. The showers are operated by tokens available from reception. (Again those using ACSI are entitled to one token per person per day) Dish and clothes washing facilities are also provided with washing machines in the large block. Across from reception is a shop come bar/café with a typical campsite menu. It is nicely positioned overlooking the lake. Bread can be ordered. There is an information room with leaflets on the many attractions around the Bodensee. There is a WiFi provision but I found it impossible to get connected on my laptop but that could be my settings and even my mobile phone struggled to connect to it. The mobile signal was OK. As mentioned the site accepts the ACSI discount card in the low season but this does not apply to pitches immediately facing the lake. Please note that dogs are not accepted at this campsite.

This campsite is in an excellent position from which to explore the Bodensee, be it by car, bicycle or train. The Zeppelin Museum at Friedrichshafen is a popular choice. As the campsite is a bit further away from the main tourist attraction might actually provide for a more peaceful stay? There is a cycle route all round the lake and it can be joined from immediately outside the campsite. If you want to take it easier the local trains (nearest station about 4 kms away) also accept cycles so easy to take the train one way and cycle back the other. There is nothing within easy walking distance of the site and for food shopping either Allensbach or Radolzell would be the best option. Lake steamers depart from Allensbach which is about 4 kms from the site.
