 To Find Site:- From the direction of Vienna on road 3 continue through Grein past the quayside and the campsite is on the left. From the other direction turn right just after Honda Garage.
Campingplatz Grein is a rustic campsite on the edge of the small town of Grein bordering the River Danube and looked over by the Schloss Greinburg. Being in an urban environment will mean some road and general noise but it’s pretty peaceful at night. The site has a park like appearance and the 87 pitches are all on grass, most are quite generous in size compared to many campsites in this part of Austria. After prolonged rain the ground conditions become quite soft and muddy and I would suggest motorhomes, in particular, make sure they position their drive wheels as near to the road as possible to save getting stuck. Electric points are generally accessible to most pitches but a longer lead might be required in some cases. Electrics are rated at 6amps and use two pin German style connectors. Apart from one other tap the only water is available at the toilet block and the same is true for grey waste water disposal and chemical emptying. The motorhome service point is of an “interesting design” similar in style to those found on motorhome aires. The toilet block is reasonable modern with seated toilets and paper provided. The showers don’t seem to have anywhere in the cubicle to put your towel or keep clothes dry although there are pegs immediately outside all cubicles. There are also facilities for dishwashing and there are two washing machines but no sinks dedicated to clothes washing. At the entrance there is a café/bar, if reception is closed, which it is for several hours of the day, you can usually find someone there. There was little in the way of information at reception. There is site wide WiFi which according to the site website and the ACSI book is free. However having been told to get the code from the bar by the guy in reception, who confirmed it was free, I had an animated discussion with an older man and I assume his daughter who tried to tell me that it was only free at the bar and otherwise it would be €5 a day! I did eventually get the code for nothing but I did not find this attitude very welcoming and this episode rather coloured my view of the customer service on this campsite. There seems to be a rather laissez-faire attitude to the management of the site generally with rubbish being left to build up to the point it was quite unpleasant to go near it, grass cut and the cuttings not collected and generally a lack of attention to ground conditions. There are no play facilities on site for children although there are some nearby. The site is in the ACSI discount scheme at a headline price of €17 a night but by the time local taxes are added we paid €22. 50 a night! Notwithstanding my criticisms this is a nice spot if the weather is good it could make an ideal place to spend a few days.
The town of Grein is immediately outside the entrance and there is a nice promenade along the river. In the main season it looks as if trip boats run from the quay. It is ideal for cycling with paved paths along the river. In the town there are a variety of shops and restaurants. For food shopping there is a SPAR in the town and a Hofer supermarket just on the road out of town to the west.
