I learned about this area and site from a prolific caravan blogger and I'm very glad I did. I had never heard of Ossiacher See or Villach but now that I have I am happy to recommend the area to others.
Their are several campsites in the area ranging from flash and expensive to big standard ordinary to small but ideal. Camping Kalkgruber falls into the latter category.
We approached from the direction of Klagenfurt and didn't have any problem finding the site which is well signed at the Eastern end of the lake. There's a space for new arrivals to park whilst you check in at the small reception. The owner speaks good English and showed us to our pitch which was big enough for our 7. 5m caravan, awning and car. The site is terraced and we were in the first row with a view of the nature reserve. It was a short walk to the fresh water point but the only obvious place to empty grey water is at the camper van service point or the chemical toilet emptying point.
Pitches are on well tended grass and the overall impression is of a very well maintained and cared for site.
The sanitary facilities are in the main block underneath apartments. They are dated but exceptionally clean. You are provided with tokens for the showers which are a bit on the small side. There are only two showers and three washbasins in the ladies and gents but we never had to queue. There are washing up sinks outside the toilets and a washing machine and dryer.
On Saturday afternoon the owner provides everyone with an egg for Sunday breakfast. Nice touch. You can also buy eggs laid by the site hens or trout from the one site trout pond.
As with most other sites in Austria we were the only Brits but found the Dutch and Germans reasonably friendly.
The nearest small village is Ossiach with a range of restaurants and a small mini market. It's a nice place to have a wander and you can also catch the ferry which drops off at several points around the lake. There are larger supermarkets and more eating places on the opposite side of the lake.
The are many hiking opportunities including one from the campsite which goes around the nature reserve. You can also catch the boat to the Gerlitzen mountain cable car and the waterfalls at Finsterbach, both are worth a visit.
A very nice site with a friendly feel in a beautiful area. British campers really should be more adventurous.
