Situated four kilometers outside the pretty, if touristy, village of Moustiers, on the main road to the Lake (Lac de Sainte-Croix), this is a decent standard, budget choice, conveniently located for the Lac de Sainte Croix (footpath … seven minutes), and Moustiers (4 mins by car).
Spread over a wide area with variable sized pitches, many very generous, the site has a busy central area around the reception and a more secluded, quieter area. Many of the ‘sanitaires’ are newish with the new style ceramic loos (no plastic seats, I’m glad to say … the washing up sinks never provided more than luke warm water when we were there.
Free wifi throughout the site, though a weakfish signal in the more far flung reaches of the site … without our booster we would have been trekking to the reception.
Very friendly staff … some with excellent English … more than helpful with site selection and advice.
The recreation area includes the usual petanque ‘drome’, table tennis and kids area.
There is no bar or restaurant, though the small shop sells a range of drinks and small range of food. Every day there is a range of visiting vans … pizza, paella, chips, vegetables, jewellery, local produce etc … so take-aways are nearly always available on site.
The stream bordering the campsite is just that. A small stream.
A new, outdoor, gym area with some decent equipment and a tent where you can book a good quality massage. The combination is the best I have encountered anywhere.
Within three minutes walk, following a path within the campsite, is a small lake with a large cordoned off area which serves as a swimming pool (Le Petit Lac). Of course, you can swim in the big lake, but that's a longer walk.
The main attraction of the area is the impressive Gorges du Verdon, which offers scenic drives, canoe and pedalo hire, white water rafting, canyoning, walking/hiking etc. If you have your own kayak/canoe/paddle board you can launch on the lake and paddle up the first kilometer or so of the main gorge … then turn back, or portage your way on upstream …
Moustiers is well worth a visit, despite the underwhelming reviews in some guide books … it’s a pretty village, touristy in parts, but not a lot of tourist junk … local pottery is offered by many outlets and is very attractive. A range of restaurants from expensive to budget and quality to match … We tried Les Santons (top of the village) and found the food superb, though not cheap, but worth every penny … Les Cascades was OK and much cheaper.
