This is a sumptuous glamping operation where a medieval theme tends to trump convenience. Eight tents are sited on wooden platforms on terraces set into a steeply sloping field. It's a bit of a schlep from the bottom tents up to the shared area at the top and the amenities in the cottage beyond.
Each tent has a little 4'6' double bed with faux fur throws, hot water bottles and twinkly fairy lights. There is a dressing table and mirror, a chest with coffee and tea and a steel thermos for you to keep hot water, a single 13A socket plus USB and a woodburner. There's a smoke and CO alarm for safety. If you're bringing children, the appropriate number of (awful) camp beds and sleeping bags will be made up for you, complete with pillows. The tents are hefty, felt lined affairs with two king poles. To close the doors you have to fiddle with weird laces. Don't leave it till the last minute if you have to get up in the night or you'll be kneeling in a puddle, cursing the dark ages.
Outside each tent is a generous, fairly private area hedged off with vines, where you can sit out on a picnic bench or a pair of folding director's chairs.
The shared area above the tents has four barbecues and four firepits laid out on a bed of bark chips. You'll need to bring chairs with you if you want to spend much time here. There's a very generous supply of firewood and kindling, but you'd need to bring your own charcoal.
Beyond this is Knight's Cottage. The night warden sleeps here, but there's also access to three very pleasant shower rooms and lavatories, a fully equipped kitchen and a sitting / games room. You can buy drinks here if you have a planning failure.
The big perk is that access to the Castle and grounds is included - a real treat when the weather is good, especially once regular visiting hours are over.
In summary, it's all very well done, but it's very different from regular camping. Most of the people you deal with are Castle staff rather than campsite wardens, so they can be a bit non-plussed and struggle to help you. The price is eye-watering however: one night costs more than a fortnight at my favourite site. Good fun, but think of it as a theme park experience rather than a campsite. If you're tall, bring your own bed.
