I discovered this excellent municipal site using Google maps, when looking for somewhere to stay close to the Puy de Dome and Vulcania with good road access. At only only 3 miles from J26 of the A89, 10 minutes drive from Vulcania and 20 minutes from the Puy de Dome this site met that criteria perfectly. We also enjoyed a trip to Volvic (as in the water), about 20 minutes away, where there is a visitor centre in parkland with various walking and cycling trails and also a huge Leclerc hypermarket and various other outlets on a retail park.

The site turned out to be spacious and very well-kept, with good-sized, level, grassy pitches, shaded or open, divided by hedges. There are plenty of water and 16 amp electric points around the site. It has the usual petanque area and a children's playground (for younger children), a small recreation room with a TV and a few magazines etc. And a communal barbecue area, though these are away from the pitches. The reception (closed between 12. 00 and 14. 00) sells drinks, ice-creams and a few groceries and has brochures, maps and leaflets and was staffed by a welcoming, hard-working manager. There was free WiFi but it was not very reliable - best near reception. The centrally situated shower and toilet block is reasonably modern, with a mixture of continental and seated toilets (paper provided centrally) and decent showers. This also houses the laundry and washing-up sinks. On entering the site you pull down to the barrier and check in at reception at the top of the site. Should there be a queue there is a lay-by just at the site entrance for vehicles waiting to enter the campsite. The site is bordered by the river Sioule (though no direct access) on two sides and a quiet road, from which the site is accessed, runs along the top. Alongside the site is a separate area with 8 chalets, also owned and run by the town. There is a pleasant riverside walk (5 minutes) from the back of the site that takes you to the small town of Pontgibaud which has a variety of shops, a couple of Boulangeries, several cafes and restaurants, a Tourist Office and Casino and Carrefour Market supermarkets. The commune's boules pitches are alongside this riverside walk, there is a picnic area and benches and it is possible to fish in the river from here.

We visited towards the end of August and we had a free choice of pitch. The site was maybe a quarter full, a mixture of short and longer stay visitors, mainly French, some German, Belgian and Dutch, and only one other British unit during our week's stay, but most were pleasant and friendly - lots of smiles, waves and Bonjours.

This site suited us perfectly, both as a base for the attractions of the area and as a place to relax in the sunshine, and we would return without hesitation.
