I have been organising a dads and kids camping trip at this site for the last 5 or 6 years. It is rare to find a site that caters to groups so well.
There are several large meadows/fields and also in-wood settings.
All pitches are passive, hence why it's so great for groups. There's plenty of space between pitches, so you're rarely bothered by anyone else. Each pitch comes with a picnic bench /table and a fire pit. They supply you with some free firewood, and more is available each day.
This is a rural campsite, so there are no electrical hookups, but depending on which of the fields you're in, you may have access to the kitchen block that has some fridges etc.
We all love this site and as others have commented, you can walk to nearby villages or towns for a bite to eat or a drink in a country pub, and the Thames is not that far away either

What a fantastic find!
Every year for the past 18 years I have been taking a bunch of dads and kids camping and we are always looking for a nice, friendly campsite (all we need is a field) and a fire pit.
I wish we had found this site years ago! There is something for everybody. Camping in the woods, camping in an open space, plenty roomy between pitches and the staff are amazingly friendly.
Thoroughly recommend!

I'm amazed this is the first review for Chiltern Retreat as it looked to be a very popular campsite. It's a bit of an oddball to review as it's not like your usual campsite!
We stayed on the May Day bank holiday weekend with a group that consisted of 2 campervans and 3 tents but the beauty of the site is that it can easily cater for groups. We camp in a group once a year and often have trouble finding a suitable campsite.
Chiltern Retreat has woodland areas and field areas to choose from. We chose the woods which has 'clearings' to pitch tents and park vehicles. There's benches and firepits provided and log bins too full of wood to burn. It's a very 'back to nature' experience but as we were blessed with gorgeous sunny weather we sat out 'til late with the fire and a few beers. The site is run by a lovely woman called Bella who is often seen on site and is happy to answer any queries and resolve any issues (not that there were any!).
Now the negative points. Depending on what you're used to for a camping experience, the site charges £30 per unit per night but for this the facilities are a little basic but perfectly usable. There's no hookup points for campervans though. We didn't mind for a weekend. Maybe it's a North/South thing but the price is a little steep for what is there but saying that we had an amazing weekend so didn't mind too much.
There's a wooden building with a single male and female toilet and a unisex toilet. There's also pot washing facilities, two showers each and another room full of local information. The showers could be a bit drafty in cooler weather but it was scorching in May! You can also use the mains sockets in the information building to charge phones etc and there's a fridge for storing food.
The Chilterns have reintroduced red kites and these huge amazing birds are everywhere circling the sky. I've never seen so many!
As a group we managed to walk to Marlow by navigating through the woods which took a couple of hours. It's a lovely town on the Thames with some pleasant pubs. There's a few village pubs within walking distance which we didn't get a chance to visit but this place is called 'Retreat' for a reason! As mentioned, you can walk to places easily enough but we had to use taxis to get back. Again not really an issue.
All in all it's a great place but is a very different camping experience for many. We'd visit again as a group or as a stop-off to travelling further south.
