We’ve now been twice to this site, in August 2017 and August 2018, and we like it very much. It’s a friendly family-run site, very informal and very European - we only saw a handful of British numberplates on our stay, though English is spoken at reception and at the bar/restaurant.
At the front of the site is a shop selling practically everything, a heated swimming pool with retractable glass roof, three slides into a plunge pool, table tennis tables, little football pitch with AstroTurf and a children’s play area (probably most suited to under 8s). There’s a bar and restaurant (the restaurant has a very popular weekly seafood festival), a pizza takeaway and entertainment on some nights (our pitch was towards the back of the campsite and, although we could hear it at night, it didn’t bother us or keep the kids awake). There’s various activities run for the children each day - treasure hunts on the beach, sports tournaments, foam parties, crafts etc).
Out of the back gate of the campsite is the beach - it’s sandy at high tide, full of rock pools at low tide. It stays shallow for a long way, though I’d advise sandshoes because of the rock pools.
Pitch size is variable - we gave them the dimensions of our car and caravan (both long - the caravan is just short of 7. 5m) and both times the plot was more than generous, with plenty of room for a full awning, plus bikes, plastic inflatables, tables, deckchairs etc. Proximity to the beach means pitches are sandy but the awning pegs held fine, they’re well sheltered from the breeze and most have shade from trees.
Facilities are good and clean - there are three separate toilet blocks, with plenty of showers, the toilets all had paper, though no soap dispensers at the sinks (why is that so common in France?), there’s a couple of stand and squat loos for the kids to marvel at but they’re in the corner and in a minority. We rarely had to queue for a shower, despite the site being full for most of our stay. I suspect booking is essential for most of July and August but piitches empty quickly as soon as the French school holidays are over and there’s plenty of space by the last week of August. There’s pot washing facilities, very popular barbecue grilling areas, (we were fine to use our gas one on the pitch but didn’t ask about others), separate shellfish washing sinks and a couple of exercise machines outside the main loo block (popular more with children than adults :-))
L’ile d’Oleron is fantastic for cycling and there’s loads of cycle paths accessible straight from the site. From the front gate, there’s a marked flat cycle path running along the road to the lovely but very touristy La Cotiniere (if you turn right) - with lots of beaches to explore on route. If you turn left, the cycle path/road leads to a shop selling excellent breakfast pastries and practically anything else you can think of), then runs in to Domino (shops/markets etc) and beyond - again via lots of lovely beaches.
It’s very rare we return to a site (there’s always so many other places to go!) - but this one ticked so many boxes for us that it was worth a second visit. It’s friendly, warm and informal and the kids loved it too :-)
