We stayed at Ilton castle Farm CL for two weeks at the end of September and am delighted to give the first review here, much to the angst of my other half who doesn't want to encourage others to visit and make it even harder to book.
Availability is always extremely limited because this is probably the best site we ever stayed in twenty years and is also competitively priced per night. During our end-of-season visit the site was always to the 5 van capacity.
Pitches are booked a year in advance by regular patrons. Only saw two campers though, so you will be ok with a tent. Maybe this was due to Covid, it's not like campers have their own toilet and shower facilities.
Starting with the bad, the site is accessed via very narrow lanes like other sites in the area so it was heart stopping stuff towing a large twin axle there. Make sure you don't arrive in the morning or you might meet another unit coming in the other direction and you will be stuffed. There are no passing places. Halfway down is the bigger Ilton Farm site which is easy to reach but does not have the close water views of the castle CL.
There are a couple of tight turns as well, it would be easy to misjudge and damage the rear panel of your van. The site is only a few minutes from Salcombe by car, twenty to thirty minutes walking which we will try sometime.
There is a public footpath that runs through the site all the way to Batson Creek if you want to walk into town. It's also possible to do a circular walk along the shoreline of Blanksmill Creek if the tide is out, it's not muddy on the edges.
Wendy who runs the site is a wonderful person and is really friendly and helpful. There's a huge field on two levels for just 5 caravans and motorhomes, and two huge fields for campers who can also have EHU depending on where they pitch. To get the best views it might be necessary to join two cables together and Wendy would lend you an extra.
On the lower field there are four hardstandings and they seemed to be more popular for some reason, we preferred to have a better view of the water from the top field and be on grass. All pitches are well protected against the worst of the elements.
I noticed something I never saw before that the grass clippings are collected when it is cut and this was a marvellous thing. All the areas to pitch are fairly flat, you would need one levelling block at most.
Mobile Internet is a brilliant - full 4G signal no matter what network you are on. The transmitters are on the other side of the estuary and there is a clear line of site.
Because of Covid19 the toilet facilities were closed, we never use them anyway pre-pandemic so I can't comment there. Going by the rest of the site they would be spotless. We noticed a static caravan on site which is obviously for hire, I bet it's at a bargain rate.
Comprehensive recycling bins on site are emptied daily, there's only one water point but there's plenty of pressure. I use two Aquarolls to cut down the number of trips up the hill to the top field. I emptied the grey waste into the hedgebottom.
Ashby's garden centre is on the main road just before the left turn down to site, and it is a wonderful place for a coffee also stocking virtually everything for camping and boating, with fresh food and the amazing Salcombe Meat Co who sell their own slaughtered meats there. For anything else like petrol then there's a Co-Op on the corner of nearby Malborough.
It was our first time on a CL or working farm and it was completely positive. No cramming in and no overlooking by neighbours. We had no light pollution and saw the Milky Way clearly at night to the backdrop of a chorus of owls. A Kingfisher would visit our feeding station by day and we had two buzzards (one very large) which were making regular appearances.
We can't wait to get back to Ilton castle and Salcombe. Next time we will take our boat and as with the excellent Higher Rew site, there is plenty of camping space so extra vehicles are not a problem.
