Sunelia Hippocampe is a 5-star campsite situated in Provence close to the small village of Volonnes. First impressions weren’t good, partly because there were road works which affected the road into the campsite (one side was being dug up and the other side was badly potholed), and partly because the campsite didn’t look anywhere close to being ready for the season. There were building works going on around the swimming pool and restaurant, heavy vehicles moving mobile homes around the site, piles of stones and old mobile homes dumped in various places, and the pitches looked untidy and unloved.
The campsite is large and has around 450 pitches split about 50-50 between touring and static pitches. The touring pitches vary from 100 sqm to 150 sqm. The electricity is rated at 10 amps and many of the pitches include water and waste facilities. The pitches are separated with bushes and hedges. Some of the larger pitches have a river view. All pitches are reasonably level and later in the holiday, once they had been trimmed, looked very good indeed. The campsite has site-wide wifi (which we didn’t use) as our 3 mifi managed to pick up a strong 4g signal.
The site has 4 toilet blocks. The 2 main blocks are together and reasonably central to the touring pitches. There is also a block in the car park and another near the swimming pool. Other than the urinals all toilet and washing facilities are unisex. The toilets are UK style but do not have seats. Toilet paper is provided in each cubicle via a large round dispenser where you pull the paper through a small hole in the middle. Unfortunately the paper tends to tear easily leaving the paper inside the dispenser with no way of getting to it. The main problem we had with the toilets was that the campsite didn’t like having more open than was absolutely necessary. When we arrived three of the blocks were closed and only one of the main blocks was partly open. This meant there were only 3 cubicles open for the whole campsite. The campsite was very busy over the Ascension weekend and all the blocks were opened but even then one of the main blocks was only opened for washing and showers. Not really good enough for a 5-star site.
The showers are push button with a separate temperature control. The cubicles vary between the blocks: some are simple showers, some include a wash basin and some also include a hair dryer. There were always plenty of showers available. The blocks also include wash basins within cubicles. Dish washing facilities are available at some of the blocks and there is also a dedicated dish washing area. There are three chemical toilet disposal points in their own building between the two main toilet blocks. The launderette has five washing machines and at least one tumble drier.
Hippocampe is very much a holiday campsite and will have plenty going on in high season for all ages. Out of season it is much quieter but even out of season we were surprised to see some activities being arranged by the site. The facilities on this site are vast. There is a large pool complex with flumes, a restaurant/bar, a take-away, a small shop, a disco and a large entertainment hall. There are many sporting facilities including tennis courts, many table tennis tables, a multi-sports pitch, boules pitches and much more. They also have bike and boat hire. All of these facilities, with the exception of the entertainment hall and disco were open during our holiday. Out of season the campsite accepts the ACSI discount card.
There are a couple of decent supermarkets close by: a Casino at Chateau-Arnoux and an Intermarche at Peipin. The latter being the larger of the two. If you like markets then the best one we found was at Forcalquier on Monday morning. Both the market and the town are well worth a visit. This is a fantastic area for walking and the tourist information centre at Chateau-Arnoux has a map (3 euros) showing over 30 walks in the local area. We tried a few walks and they were all very interesting. One actually cuts through the campsite and is a very picturesque walk along the river and around the lake.
We didn’t visit many attractions and I think families could struggle to find many places that would interest children. The two that we paid for were the Citadelle at Sisteron and the Museum of Walks at Digne-les-Bains. Both were well worth the entry fee. The museum at Digne is an unusual attraction. It consists of themed walks around their grounds (butterfly garden, Japanese garden etc. ) plus a museum showing the history of the area and a small aquarium. The campsite has a leaflet showing places of interest and from this we visited Les Mourres (strange rock formations) near Forcalquier, the Gorge de la Meourge, and a day trip in the car to the Lac de Sainte Croix, Moustier Sainte Marie, the Verdon Gorge and castellane.
We spent 17 nights at Hippocampe and despite a couple of niggles with the site had an excellent time. This part of France is very picturesque and relatively uncommercialised. If you feel this is an area you would like to visit then Hippocampe should be on your list of possible campsites.

Not pre booked and reasonably easy to find just south of Sisteron.
Very friendly welcome to what was a potentially busy site that was cramped in some areas, whilst more open in others. Most pitches were separated by hedges but the planting regimes of some trees will create difficulties when accessing some pitches.
This lakeside camp has an large and excellent 3 pool complex and offers a shop, restaurant, bar and entertainment. It must be said that during our visit (May so early season), it was very quiet and the weather dull so it was hard to get a more balanced view of what it might be like later in the summer, we could imagine that it might get a bit tight during high season.
Showers and WC’s very good.
Close by Sisteron is well worth a visit and the area is probably picturesque but for our short visit we had low cloud.
