A pleasant enough site. Van (hard-standing) pitches are quite near the main road so can be a little noisy; the tent area and self-contained chalets etc are further from the road.
Facilities basic (contained in small wooden huts) basic but clean and working. Useful small 'shop' open all hours for emergency supplies and an honesty box for paying. Farm animals (goats, pigs, hens etc) in pens good for the children.
I was hoping to use the river for kayaking but although it's possible to get into the water at the campsite 'beach', I couldn't find anywhere safe to get out of the water again, so had to abandon that idea.
The main road is a bit of a problem, there are no footpaths and teh road isn't very safe to walk along.
I did walk up to the village to go to the pub (40 mins), but one section of the bridleway was *very* muddy.

A perfect bubble of camping paradise!
We've just spent 8 nights at this beautiful little campsite. We were the first guests to arrive on thier opening day and the owners couldn't have been more welcoming, friendly and accommodating throughout our stay.
We camped just by the river and spent a good part of our stay relaxing around camp, messing around on the river in our kayak and watching the wildlife which was abundant, including resident kingfishers which was a magical sight to behold.
The campsite itself was so picturesque. The owners have created a little paradise with a small holding for goats, chickens, a rooster and bee hives.
There's a little shop with basic provisions and a very pretty lake with geese and ducks roaming freely, with a few lovely Glamping pods on the edge of the lake. The Showers were powerful and the toilets always clean.
It's location was perfect for us - miles away from the summer holiday hordes, but still so much to do in the area. We visited the local village Chulmleigh and was fortunate to experience a local festival that was going on throughout the week.
We also visited Eggsford Forest which was just over the river. You can either drive there, or paddle up stream for about 10-15 minutes (we had to portage 4 times due to low waters).
Its worth the effort as we discovered a wonderful little beach, perfect for picknincking and messing around in the water. A rope swing and walks in every direction. If you walk up the steep bank from the beech, go over the main path through a tunnel of trees you will discover the most unbelievable tree! It's size is mind-blowing! It's a
Coast Douglas-fir on the Heywood Walk.
We day tripped to Croyde and Baggy Point in search of the mammoth caves below the coastal path. Pretty treacherous to get to and the tide was to high for us to access it.
Another lovely trip was to Broadsands beach. This was well worth the 220 steps down. Go in time for low tide as there is so much to explore. You can walk to a variety of remote beaches and there's so much scrambling to enjoy. Another option is to hire a kayak from Coombe Martin and explore the coast and all the remote beaches that way.
All in all this was a perfect break away!
Thank you Clare & Justin!
