 Tempted by the lakeside location, we booked a week here via campingfrance.com. No deposit was required, just our dates and party size. We were late arriving, but I emailed them in the afternoon and we found a note taped to the gate directing us to our pitch. We checked in the following morning and I was surprised it was pay-on-departure.
This is a great site with super views of the surrounding mountains. It's really tucked into the valley, so much so that in August, it was shaded by the hills until after 8am. The altitude is 100m, so it can get cold at night, especially if it's clear. Our 3 season bags were needed in August. This site closes quite early in the autumn for this reason, it gets snow early here apparently.
The facilities are basic but adequate. Bring your own loo rolls and don't expect a soap dispenser, but there's plenty of hot water in the showers and it's all kept clean. The laundry has a couple of washing machines and driers.
Fires are allowed and each pitch has a fire circle somewhere. We enquired about firewood and were told to go and gather it from the surrounding forests. As a result is can get a bit smoky in the evening as everyone lights up.
The nearest shop is at the posher campsite in Estaing, a few miles away, but there's a daily delivery of bread in the morning, every day except Sunday or Monday. Sign up on the sheet in reception before 1830 the night before, stating what you want, and pay cash when you collect it.
The area is very much a walkers and hikers paradise, with several good walks in the surrounding valleys. For an easier option, try the walk up Gave du Labat du Bun. Grand Barbat, at 2800m, commands stunning views of the peaks aroundabouts, but it's a serious climb and a full day out.
There's no mobile reception at the site, but it can be found at the north end of Lac Estaing.
