We were at Le Haut Verdon in late August when the main summer crowds had left, so it was very quiet. Our pitch next to the river was big and spacious, but if the site had been full I think we would have had some very close neighbours. Being next to the river meant the constant sound of rushing water, which was really quite pleasant. The river is glacial melt water and is fast flowing, so not at all tempting for swimmming. There is however a pool on site though we didn't use, or even look at it. There are all the usual facilities and services on site - bar, restaurant, take-away, bikes and pedal-karts, laundrette etc - a lot more than we needed really. Reception/bar staff were pleasant and between their English and our French we were able to get along fine. Toilets and showers were a reasonable standard, though being low season only half them were open. Using the toilets gave the opportunity to read the amusing little poems behind the doors!

The small town of Colmars is a mile or two up the road and is most attractive, the main part being tightly packed within medieval walls. On market days the stalls are mainly dotted around the narrow streets within the walls, making it one of the most attractive markets we have seen in France - and we have seen a lot! The rest of the town is also pretty with parks and gardens that are green - a change from the more arid places in Provence.

For most visitors, us included, the main reason for being there is the mountains of the Mercantour National Park. We did a number of spectacular hikes, including the very much visited Lac d'Allos. If you are more adventurous than us and fancy a walk with a significant degree of exposure, try the Gorge de St Pierre. The narrow path cut into the side of the gorge sometimes hundreds of metres above a sheer drop to the river, is, to say the least, challenging. We frightened ourselves enough on the first few hundred metres to convince us not to carry on!

We didn't drive the spectacular Col D'Allos to Barcelonnette as it is not suitable for caravans but would be a magnificent solo drive. There are numerous hiking routes to surrounding peaks and passes - the view down from Col De Sestriere stretches to Barcelonnette 19km away.
