We've visited this site several times in the past and will return again.
For a Municipal it's expensive but the setting, on the ramparts at the back of the island's capital which are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is perfect for a visit to the Ile de Re.
Access is via the one way system and can be a tad tight for bigger units but it's doable. Reception is near the entrance. It closes for lunch between 12. 30 and 2. 30 out of the main season.
English is spoken and the staff are very helpful. For late arrivals after Reception has closed they leave a list of available pitches and ask you to chose one and report to them the next morning.
There is a barrier at the entrance which is closed to motor traffic between 11. 00pm and 7. 00am. Payment must be made the day before you leave. The site gets very busy so booking or early arrival is advised.
The site is long and thin with two bigger areas over two levels at each end. There is a mixture of pitches and rental mobile homes, though there are far more pitches than rentals. The pitches are a good size with water and electric (10Amp Europlug) on most. The ground is hard and sandy with some grass though in the height of summer it can be sparse.
There are two utility blocks at either end of the site with WC, showers and sinks. Disabled and baby facilities are only in the block near Reception. There are washing up sinks and laundry facilities in both blocks. Facilities are not luxurious but are good and kept clean.
There are also grey water and chemical toilet emptying facilities at both blocks. Rubbish disposal and recycling is in an open shed at the entrance
There's a cafe/bar on site selling bread and pastries, basic food and camping essentials plus drinks including wine and beer. It also serves meals and drinks both inside and on the terrace.
We ate there a couple of times and the food was good, plentiful and very reasonably priced and the people who run it are very friendly and attentive. Bike rental is available on site and there is a small children's' play area.
The real beauty of the site is that it's a short very easy, if slightly hilly, walk to the port of St Martin with it's cafes, restaurants and bars, a great place to site and watch the world go by.
It's also possible to cycle to the port on the local bike paths of which there are many. In fact the whole island is criss-crossed with them. Maps are available at Reception.
There's a bus station just outside the town with buses to the rest of the island and to La Rochelle. A free community minibus runs for the bus station to near to the port. As most towns on the island are small and have narrow streets similar minibuses operate at most of them.
For shopping there are two supermarkets in the Commercial Zone just outside Saint Martin and there are markets on most days at one town or other on the island, including a night market in Saint Martin.
This will remain one of our favourite places and we'll no doubt return soon.
