This small site (35 touring pitches) is across the road from the Mosel river on the edge of the wine-producing small town of Krov. It is owned and run by Tobias (fluent English speaker) and his dad, who are both friendly and helpful. Using the ACSI card it cost 16 euros a night, plus taxes and any electricity over the daily 4kw allowance.
The site is divided into two, the top part for seasonal caravans and the part nearer the river mainly for tourers, tents and motorhomes, though there are a small number of very tasteful seasonal pitches here too.
The whole site slopes gently downhill, so levelling may be needed, with hedges around the perimeter and enough trees to provide some shade. The Reception and bar/cafe building is at the top of the tourer part as are the shower and toilet blocks, sinks and laundry facilities.
The pitches vary in size, some large though generally on the medium to small side, and as is often the case in Germany there is nothing to divide them, though plastic poles show the outer edge of each pitch. When busy this means that you are very close to your neighbours, though actually it was never an issue and everyone just got on with it.
You just have to do a bit of tactical pitching to make sure you're not looking straight into someone else's awning (and they into yours)! After the first weekend the site became less busy and we had an empty pitch next to us. Fellow campers (mostly German and Dutch) were friendly and exchanged the usual morning greetings. The 16 amp electricity supply was metered, as is usual, and the water points were over by the shower and toilet block.
The showers and toilets, though not the most modern, were kept clean and the showers were excellent - it was great to be able to control the heat and flow of the shower. Modern dishwashing and laundry sinks and the washing machine and dryer were under cover.
Next to the site is the large municipal outdoor pool which we thought might cause a noise issue but it never did and the opening and closing times of 10am to 7pm were strictly adhered to.
Just across the road, accessed through a locked gate at the bottom of the site (for which you get a key) you can follow the Mosel (on foot or along the cycle-path) into the town (about 20 mins walk), which is full of quaint old buildings, historic wine-producers, pubs and restaurants, a tourist office, various little shops, 2 fuel stations, a little Edeka (like a Tesco Extra) and the most amazing ice-cream cafe called the Eis-Eck.
There is also a Norma supermarket a few minutes walk to the rear of the campsite and bigger supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi and Edeka) are a 10 minute drive away in Traben-Trarbach, which is worth a visit in its own right. You can also get a river boat (dogs allowed) as far as Bernkastel in one direction and Traben-Trarbach in the other - we had a very enjoyable day out by boat to Bernkastel, which is as picturesque as everyone says.
There are vineyards to the back and the side of the site with marked footpaths leading to the neighbouring villages, perfect for dog walking in the cool of the early morning and late evening.
Although not the neatest of sites, we really enjoyed our stay here and found it the ideal location for exploring the area. We would definitely return!
