Fabulous location with field view from the tent and a sea glimpse. Very quiet and peaceful site.

The pitches are very well spaced round the edge of the field.

We had a huge pitch with enough room for our tent and our son's campervan. Easy walk to the beach.

The info sheet was detailed and very useful. All the beaches in the area are lovely. The pubs are friendly and sensible prices.

There is a fridge and freezer to use as there was no electricity on the pitch.

The composing toilet is available very near to the pitches and there are showers in individual sheds in the main field.

20p is enough for a very quick shower! Everything is kept very clean and tidy.

Our granddaughter enjoyed visiting the sheep, ducks and chickens.

We will definitely return. Thank you for a lovely stay.

We couldn't stay with you as you wouldn't accept a caravan.

When there were motorhomes bigger than our caravan. However my son stayed with his children they love your site. And have stayed before and will again.

They love the location and the animals for the children and so near the beach.

Maybe you can make provision in the future so we can join them in our caravan.

Had a great stay at South Devon Camping over the jubilee weekend.

A lovely campsite with beautiful views and within walking distance to beautiful beaches.

Facilities were good with ample fridge and freezer space.

Showers fine and compost loos clean and well maintained.

We had a great time and would definitely return.

Date of Visit: August 2021 Unit:  Tent
Nights stayed: 12 Travelling as:  Family with older children

There are lots of advantages to this campsite - it is in a beautiful area and just 10-15 minutes walk along the road to the beach.

Almost all of the pitches are generously sized and there is lots of space in the middle of the fields to play games, with football goals and balls being provided, decent wind for kites and space for everyone to enjoy.

It is also very reasonably priced, perhaps this reflects the facilities. For the eco-minded, the recycling is good and the compost loos are a good idea. For those who like a fire, firepits and wood are also available and delivered to your tent.

There were also several fridges and freezers all of which were free to use, which is a nice touch.

The glo-worms in the hedges were an exciting find for us as we don't have them where we live and lots of people enjoyed going on glo-worm hunts in the evenings. The stars were also great on clear nights, with no light pollution around.

There is a pub and well-stocked shop in the village to walk to (easy footpath across a couple of small fields) and two cafés/restaurants to buy food at on the beach, an easy walk along the road.

Lastly, there was a real sense of freedom about this site. Although there were several posters around concerning noise and a very few rules, we saw nothing of the owners at all. People were very much left to their own devices and to enjoy their holiday.

However, sadly, there are also some disadvantages. Firstly, although it says that this campsite has 35 pitches, when we stayed there were significantly more than this, with the campsite stretching to 4 fields.

The 35 seemed to be just on the one main field. The next field was opposite the main field, and a further two fields had also been added, one with a totally different name on the sign at the entrance to the field, but campers here followed directions and walked through our field or along the road to use the same facilities.

A further field was said to be for campers who had their own facilities, but we saw several campers walking to use the main facilities as well. This could simply be expansion due to Covid, and perhaps in future, the site will reduce again in size.

However the increase in pitches had in no way been matched by an increase in facilities and the 4 compost loos, 2 urinals, 5 hot showers and 3 washing up sinks did not feel anywhere near sufficient to cope with the large numbers of people staying.

In addition to the increase in number of pitches, there were several pitches with large numbers of people staying - a group of 12 on one pitch for example, which clearly puts extra pressure on the facilities. It's brilliant that you can have large groups of people, for those who want to camp with friends.

The loos in particular were problematic, not only because there were queues of 4 or 5 people in the mornings, but also because 2 of them became increasingly smelly during our stay and many people felt unable to use one of them in particular, as the smell was rather strong and the flies unpleasant. Many made jokes about bringing pegs for your nose and some people simply queued for longer to use one of the other loos.

We weren't sure where we were supposed to brush our teeth or have a wash if we didn't want to shower. There were little basins in the loos, but with queues outside, it would have been hard to justify making people wait, and as mentioned, they weren't really somewhere you wanted to spend longer than necessary.

There was also only a cold water tap. Sometimes we used the washing up sinks and you could pay for the hot water here, if needed. Many people simply brushed next to their tent and spat into the hedge, but this seems wholly out of synch with the eco leanings of this site.

There were often queues for the showers, but unlike the loos, you can plan around this of course and choose not to shower at the same time as everyone else coming back from the beach. The coin meters work fine for the showers and washing up sinks and there was always hot water.

As mentioned above, almost all the pitches are very generously sized, but we felt very unlucky to have been given a corner pitch, which meant the intersecting boundary was on the diagonal and so while the back boundary of our pitch may have been long, the front boundary was half the size of all the others - as with our neighbours' - which meant we felt uncomfortably close to our neighbours who were basically right in front of our pitch and vice versa. So, do go camping here, but ask not to have a corner pitch.

The other shame for us about this site is that while it is in a beautiful area, it is right on a road, and two of the fields were the opposite side of this road to the facilities. On the phone, the owner described it as a quiet country road - it is certainly true that it is a country road in size, however it certainly wasn't quiet during our stay. I imagine out of season it would be quieter. I don't sleep very heavily, so perhaps others would notice it less, but it was disappointing to be woken every single morning with the traffic coming past and to listen to it whilst trying to get to sleep.

It definitely isn't the case that there is a constant stream of cars, but since our tent was just separated by a hedge from the road, we were basically right on it. So, do go to this site, but perhaps ask for a pitch on the other side of the field to the road. Many campers we spoke to commented on the speed of the cars (dangerously fast in some cases) as well as the noise of the road.

As it is also on a slight bend, with another road and the farm track joining the road, parents of younger children felt it wasn't safe for children to cross on their own and therefore accompanied them to the loos and showers at all times. So, do go to this site, but I would advise asking to be on the main field if you have young children or don't want to cross a road to use the facilities.

I don't feel I can rate the customer service as I had no interaction with the owners during our stay. However, I couldn't submit the review without doing so, so I have just gone for 5 to be fair both ways.

The posters said you could text for wood or to complain about noise, but we had no need to do this and I had no signal anyway, so it would have been tricky. I saw two or three different people working there - cleaning the loos, sorting out the recycling etc. But I've no idea if they were owners or employees.

This probably represents the general hands off relaxed feel about the site and I'm sure if I had needed to, I would have found the owners.

A little more care could be taken about the site itself - our pitch had very long grass for several days of our stay, which isn't a big problem, but some owners definitely take more care over their sites.

The grass didn't need to be manicured, but annoyingly, when it was cut, it was very patchily done, with lots of long bits left, (hard to see how it could have been done so poorly) but more frustratingly, the cuttings weren't collected, so every time we walked into the tent, we took the grass cuttings with us.

All easily solved from our end with a dustpan and brush, but with a little more thought, it wouldn't have been necessary.

I imagine out of season, with a well chosen pitch, this site would be an absolute delight and some of the issues I've mentioned may be just personal preferences so I would not want to deter anyone from staying here. I hope to have given a very fair and honest account of our stay here.

We had a super time in the area - there's stacks to do, both wet and dry day activities and we had no difficulty at all in filling our days. The owners have put up posters with extensive suggestions of what to do locally and really helpful details - local shops, petrol, camping equipment, restaurants etc.

So there has definitely been lots of thought about how to make it a good stay for campers.

Superb location so close to beach, sheltered field with spacious pitch,

Friendly atmosphere and regularly cleaned eco-toilets -

Really appreciated the fire pit and wood on our arrival too.

We had a wonderful time and will definitely be back very soon!
