Date of Visit: September 2019 Unit:  Touring Caravan

Split, mainly, into two areas: permanent set ups based on caravans with built on roofs/patios/cabins etc for regular visitors. And, touring campers area for tents/caravans/motorhomes etc.

The touring are is expansive and pleasantly laid out. Two large terraces have a view of the sea (3/4 of a mile away). Pitches are grassy, well tended, with no marked out pitch sizes. So, within reason, use as much as you need. But there are no borders offering any sort of privacy. When we were there this was not an issue as everyone else camped at a reasonable distance from each other.

Electricity is the usual 'spanish' 6 amp supply.

Ablutions. Paper and seats. The one within the reception/Bar/Restaurant block was clean but beginning to show signs of age: showers were not the greatest. However, there is a newish block within the permanent sites area, which also serve a small touring pitches section (no view of the sea), which is in very good condition, we used it most of the time. Especially for showers.

The bar and restaurant are well used. Breakfast (coffee and toast or pastries 3. 50), lunch and supper menu is fairly plain fare and OK standard. Not expensive.

The site is on top of a hill and about a kilometre from the Santa Elena site. The latter has very nice apartment(s) to rent (including a rooftop terrace). But for camping, Goldona just about edges it.

Access to the site is easiest from the Mutriku-Ondarroa road, about 1 km from Ondarroa take the road immediately opposite the main garage/fueling station. Up-hill and some bends, but not a real challenge. The other road up (nearer Mutriku) is longer and winds considerably.

An anomaly: the road up to Santa Elena goes through the campsite. Though it's very little used and creates no problems. Just looks like part of the campsite!

Bilbao is an hour and a quarter, as is castro Urdiles. The beach at Ondarroa is about 2 km by road, but you can walk down from the campsite (trail strats from the rear of the Reception block). Nice hike. There are a couple of beaches, the nearest is well used by locals, but not seething. Across a rocky ridge (served by concreted steps) and quite private is a naturist beach. Also well used. Though the amount of topless sunbathing apparent on the main beach makes the whole area pretty inhibition less.

Some may find the architecture of the main building to be rather austere. It's large and concrete buttressed and painted reddish brown. Other buildings on site are much more traditional spanish.
