I cannot praise this site highly enough. There's one downside, but everything else makes that seem insignificant. From arrival to departure the owners went out of their way to help but without every being overbearing.
The site itself is compact, but the facilities are superb - except bathroom 1 which is very much in need of a clean/disinfectant/de-moulding (this is the downside).
There's a single-decker bus permanently pitched on site which is used as the eating/social area when it's cold/wet and an outside firepit for when it isn't.
Food is available all day with pizzas available for a few hours in the evening. Even if you're not staying here, call in for food - you won't regret it.
Location-wise, the site is a few miles west of John O'Groats and perfectly positioned for the ferry from Gills Bay.
Stay here. If your experience is anything like ours, you'll love it.

This is a real gem of a site, the owners are friendly.
The pitches are excellent, as is the food in the bus.
They have managed to create an eco friendly, quirky site.
It just feels like 'home'.
If we didn't live 700 miles away we would definitely return.
Don't miss the Highlander Breakfast, it's delicious, I don't know how they do it for such a good price.

Lovely gem of a place! Perfect for a night's stop off.
Very quirky and friendly host.
Converted bus is a great idea to eat their lovely breakfasts.
Evening food looks amazing too but not available on our night.

I was booked for only one night in order to be at the Gill's Bay ferry early the next morning - only the ferry went out of service (again 🤯) so I needed an emergency extra night and Royston & Vikki could not have been more helpful or supportive. Huge thanks to them for their kindness during what was a stressful time for me. Lovely, lovely young couple, I wish them every continued success.
This is a small (5 van) campsite, it is unique, small and thoroughly idiosyncratic. If you are more comfortable with 'normal' campsites that have full facilities and are ordered and regimented then this is not the place for you. If you're OK with Findhorn meets Glastonbury (without the mud) then this is a charming, quirky place to pitch, and Vikki & Royston will do anything they can to ensure you have a great stay.
Each pitch is well defined and has some privacy, and the gardens/grounds are kept very nicely.
In response to the person who wrote about the oddness of booking a shower in advance this is because the little shower rooms are cleaned between each user, so it makes sense.
There is always someone on site and I expect if you came back from a day in the sea and wanted a shower when you'd not booked one this would not be a problem. Sadly I did not get the incredible power shower someone else enjoyed - perhaps I was in the "wrong" room of the two bathrooms? But it was OK, up there with the 'average' showers you find on most campsites.
Supper freshly cooked once you have ordered, so there was time to read, and get through perhaps a little more vino than intended, in a converted bus as a very comfortable dining area.
Would definitely use again, if I ever decide I can trust Pentland Ferries to sail when they say they will but even if you were not travelling to Orkney the location is great for exploring the very north east of Scotland.

What a wonderful site. The owners are so friendly, helpful and kind, extremely hard working and constantly upgrading the site.
It just keeps getting better and better.
Beautiful views over the Pentland firth, close to Gills Ferry for easy sail over to Orkney (when the ferry hasn't run aground 🤣)
The on site food is excellent, they have a licence to sell alcohol. You don't have to be booked on site to be able to get food as take away is offered. Fabulous pizzas, good choice on the dinner and breakfast menus.
Highly recommend booking way in advance, this site is always popular!

Fantastic stopover! Really reasonable!
Huge pitch, amazing children's play facilities, best power- shower I have EVER had in my life!
Also the first place I've ever been given a box and bags on my pitch for rubbish to be recycled, daily! Eco refills for any of your toiletries and cleaning things on site, .
Converted bus to shelter from weather eat, drink play and read. Diner on site is fab and reasonable, and speedy despite being cooked to order.
Only negative I have is that you have to book a one hour slot to shower /use a bathroom. Why would you Want to do that when on holiday?! I believe this is because they charge non residents/ motor homes to use the bathrooms throughout the day.
Therefore you can't come back from a hot day out and about and wash 😔 or if you're booked for the evening you can't wash in the morning! I would rather they charge more for each pitch and then they would not need to let the bathrooms out to non residents personally.
Not noisy overnight despite being on main road.
If there was anything of interest in the area we would be back like a shot but sadly the area has nothing for us now we have seen it.

I highly recommend this stop; lovely atmosphere, the pitches themselves where great and well laid out.
Overall, incredible service, location and site; we cannot wait to go back and will be heading back there as soon as we can (And staying longer next time).

Efficient. Friendly. Good humoured. Well managed. Nice touches like walks and bbq places.
Good rubbish and recycling arrangements. Developing nicely.
Calls itself a night stop but is better than that.
