Site was in a level, well kept field behind house. Great location as walking distance (30 mins) to town of Maldon, shops etc. Bus stop across road to take you into town. We love to use our bus pass and went to Burnham on Crouch, could have gone to Tiptree, Chelmsford or Colchester.

Friendly owners who take a trip round the field each night, I assume to see if all is well

Hook up is by token but a couple of pounds saw us ok for 3 nights. Shower is in a very old building and a bit run down but clean enough

We used our own facilities

Only one toilet too and you need to take own paper (very French)

Biking from the site is brilliant, cross the road, down towards Heybridge basin and into Maldon. Walking not bad either. Two pubs in Heybridge, food looked ok.

We went to see the Blackwater estuary and Thames sailing barges and were not disappointed

I would recommend it and go back

Our first CL site that we have stayed at and we were very happy. The site was nicely kept and in a great location. In walking distance to Heybridge Basin and near to 2 nice pubs. Enjoyed it so much that I have already booked for another stay in a few weeks. Electric hook up very different but only used about £4. 00 for the 2 days and managed to charge everything and not run out.

Site is close enough to various shops including a supermarket, butchers and other useful shops.

Spent the weekend at Saltcote Hall and thought it was a lovely location. In walking distance of Heybridge basin and a short drive to Maldon and located on a farm with horses.

The site was recently mown and in a nice private location with views across the field.

The toilet and shower were in the barn and although they were not dirty as such, they could have been cleaner. You had to take toilet roll, soap and hand drying items with you to use the toilets as none of these were supplied - we didn't bother and used the facilities in the van.

Price was ok at £8 per night, although we were a little surprised that we then had to top up the electric meter with £1 coins (not had to do this before on any campsite). We were running our fridge and one evening ran a light and small tv and we put in £2 over the weekend, so averaged out about £9 a night in total.

I would not particularly recommend the site, but I would not discourage people from going either as its nice for a weekend.

We have been to this site numerous times but felt I just had to mention how farmer-friendly it is. On site toilet and shower in barn area very clean and tidy, site mown frequently (no left over grass cuttings), nicely tucked away behind farmhouse and so peaceful only the beautiful sound of ducks, geese and swans flying to and from the pond. Will always be one of our favourites!

We arrived at the site at around 4pm and found the directions in the book pretty straight forward. We presented ourselfs to the owners and paid our money (£4.00) for the night.

The site was in a 1/2 acre field and 4 others were already there. The owner asked us if we had stayed there before and upon being told it was our first visit, the instructions were as follows: "The toilet and shower are in the brick building and the fresh water tap is on the side. If you need electricity you will need to park near a box!" Now we are pretty new to this camping thing so we failed to ask some pretty basic questions. We parked up and plugged in, but there was no electric. After a few minutes bickering back to the house only to be told that inside the box was a coin operated meter! £1 later and we had electric.

Next came the showers. Bit of a disappoint there. One toilet and one shower to be shared by all - fair enough but it had been some time since they had been cleaned. Still we were hot and sticky and wanted a shower so in we went (together of course to save water!) It was ice cold! Aha! we thought there must be a meter here too! But nooo.. We needed a token! One of us had to get dressed and go back to the house now for the token (and it wasn't me!) well the other sat buck naked waiting and shivering from the blast of cold water that had originally come down! Back comes the old man (mine) with token in hand.

Shower taken, back to van windows open, bottle open, just relaxing when the most enormous invasion of flies I have ever seen found us. I have never seen the like! I don't know what we were near but the flies loved us!! Of course we don't have any blinds so it is roast or wave flies away. We opted for the waving, had an early night and left early the next morning. Not the best weekend we have had away actually! Better luck next week hopefully!
